Archaeology is Sh*te!!

When fragments of paper where found in the fill of a 17th century latrine in Smithfield, Dublin, the archaeologists and conservators performed above and beyond the call of duty.

The paper was carefully extracted from the infill (**** still smells after a couple of centuries in an anaerobic environment!!) and sent to the labs. Here it was treated with great technical care which would take too long to go into here (I don't really understand all the big words !!).

Turns out the paper fragments were from pamphlets, proclamations and almanacs from the 18th century which went the way of all spare paper before the advent of soft three ply bogroll.

So you still want to be an archaeologist, do you?? I have heard similar tales from other excavations in Dublin. Anybody got more tales of a paeleofaecal nature?

I pity the archaeologists of a thousand years from now who'll have to sift through the endless landfills of the ruins of our civilisation!:D
