Equipment Insurance

Posting this after the horse has bolted - I just had my brand spanking new 350D and my almost brand spanking new 50mm f/1.4 USM lense stolen :(

I wanted to know if other users here have their equipment insured seperately - i.e. outside of their regular household insurance? It's a little late for me unfortunately, but would like to know for future reference what the best opinions open to me are...

I'll start a seperate thread for you all to offer you opinions on replacement equipment - it was stolen from my friend's car, and they have generously offered to replace what was stolen.

    sorry to hear about that!!
fella told me recently he had a Canon 350 literally out of the box and he dropped it - bought it in Dixons in Cork i think but bought some sort of insurance as well €150 or something like that and was able to claim straight off, so he said!

    Thanks.
Unfortunately I don't have that option available to me - I'm buying in the US, so would prefer a seperate policy for when I get back home.
Cheers for the info. - hopefully it'll be of advantage to some other people considering buying big...

Liking your 'water and rock' shot.

Just as an aside, does the friend not have content insurance on their car? Not sure if that's even available here, but I know that at home in Canada you are generally covered if something gets stolen out of your car. Also, a lot of home insurance policies cover this kind of thing even if it's not actually stolen from your house.

Having said that, I'm very interested in this as well, to cover my new D50 when I get it (and my laptop, as well).

    Good point.
Yes she does, but she's just after switching provider, plus there's a $1000 exclusion, so in the long run she would be more comfortable not messing with the car insurance - she had her phone and a few dollars stolen - so is willing to write it off as a bad experience, and reimburse me...

I guess she's worried about her premium - silly I know (what's the point in having insurance in the first place :( ) but its her call.

I'm not sure if this topic has been covered before, probably no harm in resurecting it for new users like me.

Fair enough - the added cost in insurance over time would likely outweigh the cost of replacing the camera out of pocket. You're right though, it does kinda defeat the purpose of insurance, but that's how they make money, the filthy bastards. :)

Any feed back FinoBlad? Are you still with PJT? Did you ever make a claim?

I added my 20d to the house insurance. It's covered if it is damaged or stolen from anywhere, not just in the gaff. Very sorry to hear about your cam btw.

Yes. Never needed to so far touch wood.

Anyone that sells their photos or earns from photography should read the fine print of their home insurance policy that covers their cameras, just to be sure you're covered.
