..... whats with all the dots....

From what I can make of your post, no they can't.

Please can you give any more information though, it'll make it easier for you to get a definite answer.

Are they specifying different age requirements based on nationality? That would strike me as being discrimination. If it's for different roles though it's probably "ok".

It's not ok in any form.

It dosen't appear to be legal but more information would be required. An employer can discriminate on age grounds on very exceptional circumstances but I doubt that any work that Dell do would qualify under this.

(An employer is perfectly entitled to discriminate on age grounds if the position to be filled legally requires a person to be above a certain age: e.g. If Dublin Bus wished to recruit trainee drivers, it would be perfectly entitled to seek persons over 21 years of age, as one cannot legally drive a bus in a public place, under that age.)

Sorry about my first post, Anyway here is the story. The Company i work for handle Dell recruitment calls. Basicly as far as i no its computer assembly... Its only 1 type of job anyway. Most of the calls would be from foreign nationals. For the past couple of month Dell have been sending down the requirements in order to be able to go for an interview. For the Past 3 months Dell have said Irish People have to be over 24 in order to apply/go for an Interview and Non National can be of anyage. Now these are the same jobs the only reason i said it as i think it is highly wrong in them doing so.

That most definitely has to be illegal. I would think that any Irish person who ever applied to Dell and is under 24 would have a case here.
Who is supposed to police this kind of carry-on?

it certainly sounds illegal, however, id be surprised if a company like Dell would hold such a practise.
but you never know. Im sure there are caveats in there to dodge any illegalities.

i suppose you could always report it to the dept of trade or something.

That's a clear breach of discrimination laws in my book. It may not be Dell's company policy but that doesn't mean there isn't an idiot working in the HR dept.

I'm no legal expect, but IMHO before you do anything you shold probabley discuss the issue with senior management (in your company) and they should get legal advice. If your company follows through with Dells request even though you may not be emplaying anyone yourself, you could well be implicated with regards to discriminating on the grounds of age.

If your company does deciede to do anything about it, it may be an idea to forward CV's for suitable people under the age requirements, as if you did get implicated you could then try and show that your company was not enforcing the age restricitions.

I work in recruitment. The equality laws are nonsense. Most employers ignore them.

The simple way they do this is to ignore all job applicants who don't meet their "criteria".

Other ways are clever wording of job adverts. For example, "heavy lifting might be required" means we don't want to hire females. "Would suit a mature person" means no young ones. Must have fluent written and oral English and be legally allowed work in Ireland means Irish only. Knowledge of Polish an advantage means **** off expensive Irish people.

But in general, they just ignore applications which don't suit.

Equality laws only really come into play when you are looking for a promotion...

It's a bit like why you don't see any male checkout operators in some supermarket chains.

I'm 18 and aparently I was well suited for a Dell job. I didnt take it cos it was a contract, but it makes me think. Maybe they thought I was foreign? I mean, I have a foreign name, and dont put my nationality on my CV

Companies are just cxnts these days

This is only in the past few days they have this rule in place. Was talking to a few work mates today. They thought it was a disgrace.
