What an ass - an completely untrained guy (probably half cut) gets over excited so he choke slams him, then starts squaring up to him and getting in his face.

I really hope he didn't get paid for refereeing.

Talk about "King in your Kingdom". It f***s me off , in any sport, when a Ref is all about the 'I'm the man and that's that' stuff. I hate superiority complex!

Apart from ego tripping refs, what about biased refs linked to fighters. I competed alot in the 'freestyle' points sparring years ago with competitors as corner judges, refs who could be swayed by an aggressive competitor, (youknow in your face stuff) and senior divisions height not weight based.

I was competing against the brother of a very prominent kickboxing instructor and tournament host from Leixlip. He was 15.5st, I was 10 1/4. I got hit in the face with an axe kick fracturing my eye socket, slight nerve damge to my face and a crack down one of my teeth.
I couldn't continue because of my injury, the ref deducted 1 point from this guy and let him continue despite the light contact to the head rule. I was laughed at by the organiser as I lay on the ground coz I thought my eye was bleeding.

ALthough I don't compete now, I would umpire at ITF TKD comps and from my experience at that, althought theres alot of umpiring resourses required, its a very fair system to competitors.
At the end of the day competitors train hard for tournaments, the least they deserve is a fair umpiring.

I've been on both ends of this stick.

I competed in a Bushido Comp about two years ago and actually heard a person shout, "They award the fights on aggression!" I got hit with a barrage of body shots (I'm 6"3' he uh was short?) I landed less hits, due mainly to him having his head in my guard, but mine were alot cleaner. Now i'm no judge, least of all of my own fight, but I reckon I was hard done by.

The other was a point sparring comp with 3 pts for a kick to the head. I had a head guard, he didn't, I kicked him in the head, Excessive Force was called, I lost by a point.

The thing is, there were no umpires at these fights, just the Refs. One guy, One call, law of averages dictates s/he'll some bad calls and there ain't no TV match official!

Did anybody notice that the fighter gave the ref a shove in the head before any of this happened? In some ways, it would be nice to see all fighter being a little more respectful of the the ref. At the very least, expect a response if you choose to get physical with him...

As long as we're telling bad refereeing stories... I have dozens but here's my fave.

I was in a semi-contact tournament organised by a major ITF group. As a part of an "outside" organisation, we were first told that we couldn't enter, and then when sense was seen, we were told, ok. I stood on the scales and tipped into the light heavyweight category. Cool, no bother. But come fight time, I'm in the middleweights. Weird, but hey, again I was cool with it.
Turns out they wanted to just fight each other in the light heavy, they were all mates. So they went in and beat the tar out of each other, hitting as hard as they wanted, no stoppages, no warnings. I thought "ok, thats how it is, fine".

When my category started, my ref, a woman, took a look at me and said "listen, I won't tolerate anything dirty from you. I know what you guys are like". Great start, and it went downhill from there. I actually felt sorry for my opponent, who, all respect to him, was no great shakes. Firstly, he was oputweighed thanks to the rigging of the light heavy category, second, I knocked him around, and thirdly, he had to suffer the embarrassment (and he was embarrassed) of having his hand held up at the end after I was deducted most of my points for "excessive contact". Towards the end of the fight I was really trying not to hit the guy hard. I felt like the guy in Trainspotting playing pool with the tough lad, and not being able to lose! He kept walking in and I kept hitting him and having a point deducted!

At the end of it, the ref came over and said "I told you I would watch you", I tried to be classy about it and just smiled and said "gee thanks", but it was hard. The other lad came over and apologised to me and said he withdrew himself- he didn't want the win. Classy guy.
