    Hello,

I dont know a whole lot about networking but i seem to be getting somewhere. I have 2 windows 2000 pcs, 1 upstairs (well call this Top) and 1 downstairs (well call this bottom). I ran about 50 meter of straight through network cable from the Top pc to the eircom netopia 3347 modem/router. Then i ran the network cable from the bottom pc to the modem/router. I used the network cable that eircom provide with the modem so i presume this is straight trough network cable too. BTW the modem is right next to the bottom pc.

Anyway then i name the top pc in network settings as FRONT and put it in workgroup instead of domain and gave it an ip address of 192.168.1.10 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0, everything else is detect settings automatically.

For the bottom pc i leave it on detect setting auto for everything and name it BACK in the network settings and also put it under WORKGROUP instead of domain.

Using the bottom PC i go into My Networks and click on COMPUTERS NEAR ME and i can see the computer called FRONT or as i call it TOP PC. There i can access all the files no problem.

However doing the same on the other end i.e the TOP PC produces 2 results, 1 i either can only see the FRONT computer in COMPUTERS NEAR ME or more often it gives an error something on the lines of cannot find network path when i click on the computers near me????

My question is can i view files fromboth ends or does the network only work one way. and if it can work both ways how can i fix it so the TOP PC can see the bottom pc.

btw i have shared all the drives on both pcs including cdroms

Why not set FRONT's TCP/IP setting to auto as well

I presume your Caymen Netopia router is set to act as a DHCP server and auto hand out IP address, it may resolve the conflict.

As i said i dont know a whole lot about it, a friend done the settings for me before the modem arrived. Ill try both on auto settings and see how it goes

Can you open a command prompt and type "IPCONFIG /ALL".
Do this on both PC's and post the output.
It will give us a better idea of exactly how it is configured.

The first pc seems configured ok, the 192.168.1.10 ip.
Why not just call second pc 192.168.1.11 with same subnet mask - 255.255.255.0.

As longs firewalls are happy and cabling ok you should be able to ping eachother.

WIth auto detect you need a DHCP server, probably a router but i would use fixed IP settings for only 2 pcs communicating.

As said above do a IPCONFIG /ALL print out for both PC's so we can see the configuration.
Start -> Run. Type CMD and hit return. type ipconfig /all.

You will see a print out, look for the Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection one.Right click, select Mark from drop down. Highlight the section i just mentioned, click the blue bar ontop of the window select Edit->Copy and paste it in a post here.
