I have a fax machine and just the one phone - also have a house phone.
When i have the fax plugged in and on when the phone rings the fax picks it up, obviously to detect weather its a fax, but its a pain in the butt cause the other person hears these weird noises, and i have to run to turn it off etc. ANyway, without getting a seperate line, is there a way i can leave my fax plugged in and if its a fax coming thru it will pick it up, if not it will leave the phone to ring?? I have a feeling there isnt and its just the settings of the fax, which might as well be written in Chinese btw!!

    Any help is appreciated

Normally you can set the fax to reply after a certain number of rings, so if someone doesn't pick up after 6 seconds then the fax will reply for you.

But is not having a second line a good solution for you? Could you just turn the fax on when you're expecting a fax?

EDIT : Some faxs have 'distinctive ring capabilities'. It's able to detect a special carrier signal on the line that tells the machine that it's a fax and not a normal call. Besides needing a fax that is able to do this you'll also probably need to pay your telecom provider a fee for the service (I honestly don't even know if it exists in Ireland).

"The Stick is a programmable, three-port switch. Connected to a single
incoming telephone line it provides three ports (RJ11 with BT adapters
provided). These are set up for Voice (phone / answering machine), Fax
and Modem but you can use other combinations of telephone devices. It
can be connected to the master socket or to an extension socket.

In its default configuration, The Stick will recognise incoming fax
calls and divert them to the Fax port. Modems dialling in must issue
the correct Security Access Code to reach your own modem, thus your PC
and data are protected. Voice calls will go to the telephone /
    answering machine.

It would make sense to get another phone line just for the fax, but i wouldnt even get that many faxes in, i just need to have one just incase. Im being a penny pincher basically :D
