European city weekend break

The girlfriend and myself are planning a weekend away probably around the August bank holiday, more than likely for 3 possibly 4 nights. Does anyone know of any good sites or travel agents I could check out for this?
Been looking at lastminute.com which seems to have some pretty good deals, i.e 4 nights in Budapest for 2 at around 800 including flights & hotel.

However all the flights there seem to be indirect and can spend up to 6 hours or so travelling which is too much considering it would be only for a few days.

Also, any recommendations on good cities to go to? Between the 2 of us we've been to a lot of places but always up for checking out somewhere new. What's Budapest like for instance? looks like it could be worth a trip.

    Cheers

I wouldn't even go for a travel rep booking everything yourself is really easy and very cheap depending on what you want from your accomidation. Aer Lingus do very cheap flights off their website and you may be able to find good cheap apartments on hostelworld.com. It's a good website for finding strange/unique/closer to the local lifestyle place to stay just scroll down through the hostels and your bound to come across something suitable for couples. I reckon you could get the lot for €400.

I've never been to budapest I've heard mixed opinions you ether love it or hate it very big city.

I'd recomend Prague and if you have time take a day trip to cesky krumlov.

cheers mate, I'll check out hostelworld. sounds like the type of thing I like, much prefer getting a little old apartment or something for a few days rather than a bland hotel. when you say 400 do you mean for 2? the price I quoted (800) was for 2 people. Been to Prague before, agree it's a beautiful spot, was thinking of heading back there, must check and see if the girlfriend has been.

I agree with Scum Lord. Have a look at booking things yourself.

http://www.craigslist.org/about/cities.html is a good place to start. Doesn't cover all European cities but can be very useful when looking for accomodation other than hotels.
I booked a three night break in Barcelona in a four star hotel & flights back in May for €250 per person. I just used aer lingus for flights & checked out hotels on expedia & hotels.com before booking directly with the hotel.
I found that the hotel's offical website can sometimes be a lot cheaper than ebookers or expedia or other such websites.

It's definitely worthwhile shopping around and as you appear flexible as to your chosen destination, you should be able to get a great deal.

PS I would highly recommend Barcelona for a city break is you haven't been there yet.

cheers Rachel, yeah normally go the route of doing it myself, been a long time since I went through an agency, always worthwhile knowing what offers are about though.

P.S Barcelona was one of my first choices too, girlfriends been there before though :(

I reckon you could get the pair of ye for €400. Aerlingus should get you there for around €100 each (and you can get cheeper than aerlingus of course) and accomidation should cost in the range of €30 - €100 a night, especially if you pick an eastern European country.
