Channel 4 have today announced that they will be streaming live programmes online via their website.

    http://www.channel4.com/microsites/S/simul_c4/index.html - has more details.

I wonder will this be for UK registered viewers only, or for open access to anyone? They won't be showing acquired programmes or films, so maybe viewers all over the world will be able to view Channel 4.

Hmm, be interesting to find out, though I'd say they'll do the same as the Beeb and have it available to UK internet users only.

Will need to look further into proxies.... :)

Anyone in ROI got it to work? Tried in Belgium getting video error. I think you need to set yourself so that they think your PC is in the UK.

    Any views?

Maybe Channel 4 cleared the rights for Ireland ?

Well don't channel 4 broadcast irish ads, so they must have some license for Irish distribution. Their website states UK only, let's see how long this lasts for! Wonder if RTE will follow....

This is a nice complement to BBC & ITV being FTA on satellite.

    391kbit video stream. Nice!

Some programs aren't on due to "Rights Restrictions". This applies in the UK or Ireland.
I think Ireland is being counted as part of the UK for this tbh. Since they're only showing Channel 4 commissioned shows on it, it's no big deal I would imagine.

    According to Channel 4's website:
I keep seeing trailers instead of the programme I want to watch. Why is that?

Some of Channel 4's programmes will be unavailable online due to the rights we have to broadcast programmes on the internet. These are largely restricted to programmes Channel 4 has acquired from other broadcasters rather than commissioned itself. For example, programmes such as Deal or No Deal, Big Brother, the Paul O'Grady Show, Countdown, Channel 4 News and Supernanny were all commissioned by Channel 4, and will be available to watch on the Live Simulcast. Other programmes such as Friends, Lost and Desperate Housewives were acquired from American broadcasters and will not be viewable on the Live Simulcast. We are also unable to show racing and films.

If we don't have the rights to broadcast this programme over the internet, you'll have to watch it via your telly-box.

The english postal codes have changed.
All ya gotta do is look up any london address in Google and then put this postal code into the registration section.

    Instant Channel 4 TV!

I am watching it now. Cool. I have not had channel 4 since I changed to SKY over 4 years ago.

Nice to have it back even if it does push up the download quota...

    Or Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland........

Can one get around the Geo Locking with proxy servers ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,451 ✭✭✭✭watty

A lot or all operator formerly known as NTL Digital Cable customers in Dublin have UK NTL IPs. Or did have.

Yes a proxy will work. If there is an open noon-subscription one though (left in UK) it should be closed as open proxies are a menace.

A friend with BB in UK can easily setup a VPN and proxy for free (other than cost of Broadband).

BA21 4DN is my old postcode (King Street, Yeovil, Somerset), which works. Unfortunately it uses Windows Media Player and I'm using Linux :(
