Hi folks, I've just purchased a computer and don't have my monitor as yet and because i'm too impatient to wait for the monitor, I was wondering if i'd be able to connect the computer to a laptop so as to view it on the laptop.

    Is this possible???

I don't think it can be done I'm afraid. Your Laptop would need to have a video-in socket and that's doubtful.

    You could :

    1) Hope and pray that the TV-OUT of your computer is able to auto-detect your TV. That way you could control the PC via your TV but most gfx cards need to be told to turn the second display on.

    2) You'll pick up an old CRT monitor for about €20 in the For Sale forum.

Doesn't need to be. If you can borrow a monitor for 20 minutes, install vnc onto your laptop and PC. Then you can remote control your PC from your laptop.

*OR* if your TV has a VGA in [Mine does :)] you can plug your PC into that.

He can't install VNC onto his PC because he doesn't have a monitor.

Or if you have Windows XP Professional, you can turn on Remote Desktop, but again you'll need to have a monitor connected directly to first turn it on...

If that was to me, I did say to borrow a monitor. Most people know other people with a monitor.

Is it not possible to get a monitor cable that can plug into both the pc and laptop and do it like that?

Nope. The laptop won't accept an input from another device.

you could modify a linux boot disk to boot up and share the desktop

BUT I'd imagine you are talking about windows so you will need to run the whole setup routine , setting everything to Irish, clicking on next about 26 times, changing to classic - in which case you would need the monitor.

laptops might have TV in but that's rare
AFAIK no computer comes with VGA in unless you have tracked down a very special video card - pass through's don't count.

Theres a button on my laptop that will allow me to use a big projection screen instead of its 14" lcd, is this not the same thing as plugging into another pc?

No. That port is for plugging into either a monitor or as you said a projector, i.e. a device for displaying the image and not a PC.

Lies, it can be done quite easily. But you will require a monitor to so the initial setup and you must be on XP Pro.

In control panel allow remote desktop, put a password on the machine (because remote desk won't work without it).

(oh and you might need to make the laptop's IP a trusted one if using windows firewall).

You can now lose the monitor.

Connect and your done. I have a setup like this for my HDTV box and it works perfect across the LAN.

    Thats it.

Look...I know this topic has been beat into the ground but the OP doesn't have a monitor and is looking for a way to use his PC without one.

If he had a "monitor to so the initial setup" then he wouldn't need to do the setup would he? He'd just use the monitor he had !

Either way, he's probably reading this on his spanking new monitor which should have turned up by now :)
