I know there is a sticky for retailers but how often do you look there. ;)

I've just noticed that Komplett are doing a very large selection of lenses. They must have just started doing this recently. Anyway the reason I mention it is because I have been getting stuff off them for years and have always found them spot on. Delivery is only around €12 too.

The prices look OK but I haven't compared them to others yet.

You can see them here: http://www.komplett.ie/k/kl.asp?bn=10198

Not sure about the L Lens going rates but some of the non L ones are way cheaper than shop prices here in dublin.

I stuck it up in the Interaction/Komplett forum to see if they respond. Must be just a mistake.

Looks like they mixed it with the F2.8 CPS version which typically goes for 4.5K plus !!

The sigma lense I bought last week in town is cheaper than on komplett.
From what I've heard about their returns policy ,I wouldn't buy any glass off them.

Imagine your knew lense ,been thrown around the back of a transit ,trown into a depo ,thrown back into a van and then you open it :D

They are claiming a 45 day delivery time for the Nikon 18-200 DX VR which I cannot find on the street. I wonder are these times reliable?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,094 ✭✭✭halenger

    More than likely not.

They do Nikon now? They didn't last I looked. There is more stock of these cropping up but it lasts only hours - at reasonable prices that is. In the last few months I've only seen it in stock twice at B&H and both times it was sold out when I looked again a few hours later.

The Sigma 10-20 is definately way overpriced. This can be had for 459 in Camera Centre at the top of Grafton Street sure!

How do you think they get to the High Street Stores?

About E749 for the 70-200 4L which you can get for around $550.... bit of a markup there.

they usually come as part of a larger order ,packed together.

Nice to see them doing Tokina though. Better price than in stores here too - I think Camera Centre are the only place doing them and they're 550 or so I think. Now they just need to add some Tamron and lower all the prices LOADS so I can buy more stuff.

Take dollar price, change sign to euro symbol, add customs fees, add excessive delivery fees (to get to them), add markup and we have a nicely overpriced result.

Do remember that US prices are quotes sans-sales tax, being in and around 8% on average I think. If you were to buy in NY then you'd have to add that. Of course if you order from out of state then you get away scot free. That's what we need in the EU. No sales tax/VAT for out of 'state' purchases. I'd end up importing more than I already do.

For the sake of comparrison one is better off looking at technikdirekt, jessops.co.uk, pixmania and or ac-foto to name but a few.

They will always be insanely cheaper in the US.

Yeah I had already calculated all that, was just posting list price. As for the other sites, have already checked them out, and have ordered from them before... still more expensive, just handier, with faster delivery if you consider customs wait and all that.

I compared a few prices on lenses from komplett against the ones on AC-Foto.com and Komplett were dearer by between 50 to as much as 250 euro on each comparison. In saying that,i have bought all my pc stuff from them and found them excellent with delivery never taking more than 5 working days.I have no experience though in returning anything as all the stuff i bought worked perfectly.Has anyone bought lenses on the net,how was the experience?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,764 ✭✭✭Valentia

Yep. Their prices are on the high side alright.

I know there are horror stories about returns on their forum but I think they are a very small minority. Good experiences rarely lead to a thread. I have aways had great service even on the occassion that I had to return a duff motherboard. I'll mention to McKomplett about the pricing and maybe they will make them more competitive.

I have bought my lenses from Hong Kong. They were stopped in customs but the value was always a lot less than what they cost. I would prefer to get good value within the EU though.

Valentia ,I was always concerned about mishandling of lenses .
Do you wreckon buying lenses on the net is a good way to go ??.

I've never bought any camera stuff on the net.:o

    Brian,

I have bought everything I have on the net. I haven't had a single problem. Maybe I am just lucky but I'd imagine that has been most people's experiences. You only ever hear about the problems so it sounds worse than the reality. I'd be interested to hear other peoples experiences too.

Komplett packing has always been first class, to the point of being ultra cautious. I have only bought computer gear from them though.

Thanks valentia ,didn't realize there was so much confidence in buying goods on the net.

    Brian.

All my camera gear was bought on the net including my L series lenses , 20D etc . Everything arrives in enough bubble wrap to build a bouncy castle , so theres no need to worry about damage.

Again , Ive never had a problem.

With regards to komplett I buy all my computer stuff from there , havnt bought any lenses yet but if the prices come down I probably will ,
Ive returned a few things to komplett and there was no hassle , issues were dealt with timely and efficiently .
Heck I even bought my TV of em ! So I have no problem with them.

Ahhhh, I wish I could say that I bough my L lenses off the net too but I can't afford the bloomin' things. :o:p

I'm the same as Andy, bought my 20d and 1 L lens of the net, 20d from Pixmania and 70-200mm from eBay in Hong Kong. Never had a problem yet. I also get all my comp stuff from Komplett and never had a problem there either. So far. Touch wood.
If Komplett achieve parity pricewise with eBay I'd go with them.

Oh dear, more rip off Ireland. Thank God for eBay & Hong Kong sellers :D

because of where i live (we have one ultra uncompetitave camera shop) i've got all my stuff on the net:
from lenses to camera to memory and waiting for filters at the mo

    i've gotten stuff from
    ffordes.com
    digitalwonderworld.de
    gobeyond

bought my camera from camireland it was a COD transaction which suited me as i didn't have to send any money, just paid the courier when he called with the camera.
so far everything has been very positive.

Which get thrown around a depot, and into the back of a transit van. Whether it's 1 lense, or 100, they all get roughed up the same. I wouldn't worry. Komplett have packaged everything I've bought to the point of bordering on obsession about product safety.

Cheers ned ,i got a couple of things from komplett myself.
I like their website ,it's secure and easy to navigate.

Didn't realize they pack up the lenses ,I thought they send them in the box they come in.

    Brian.
