I'm currently using ZoneAlarm, but I think it's brutal. It blocks alot of webpages and slows down the performance of IE completely.

I've used Sygate before and found that ok.

    Any other recommendations?

Nope, I've tried many of them and have always gone back to Sygate.

I use ZA without problems myself but Outpost has had good reports about it.

Sygate is the best I have come across so far, though I am looking to change now that its been discontinued after Symantec bought the company.

I haven't had much problems with ZA, but not been able to forward ports is a bit poor.Try Firefox with ZA, I have no problems with it.

ZA is terrible. It often blocks websites giving the stupid page cannot be displayed error (random websites like gmaila nd boards included in this). Then when I shut it down i can access all sites without problems....

    Might try outpost later

I've never seen ZA block websites O_o
You must have set it up some screwy way, or it's some issue elsewhere (e.g. your modem/router)

Same here, have never had ZA block websites, also i prefer opera as a browser so maybe ur issue is a combination of za setup plus IE

Using Zone Alarm myself, I've never had any issues like the 2nd poster has. Its a very well / Easily configured program. I'd recommend it all the way.

sygate is the best tbh, can't beat it, it's unobstrusive but rock solid.

let me know when and if you find a worthy replacement it is a shame symantic bought it out.

howdy, Jetico is very very good for a free firewall. It can be little intrusive at first but has many settings and learns from your application of rules how to behave.
Main drawback is that it rears its head quite often until it gets used to what your pc is doing, and of course what you're doing. If you don't mind playing around / experimenting with its settings or are used to firewalls and the principles behind them I'd recommend Jetico. If you're more of a firewall newbie then you might be put off! :)
