I'm thinking of taking a year out with wife and kids (7+9) and doing a bit of travelling/working.Anywhere but here sort of thing!Myself and missus have done this already to Australia but with no kids.Got the inspiration from some Irish family I saw on T.V. going around the world on a boat.Has anybody done anything like this, any websites, forums, books etc to enlighten us or are we mad.

you should do a house swap its a great way to spend a long time away without your house being empty and having to pay loads on accomodation .It takes a bit of trust though . My parents House swapped loads when I was a kid and It always worked out well .

here are a few of the companies

At ages 7 and 9 I can't imagine it'll be too difficult to home school them. Just get some information on the curriculum that they would be doing from their current schools so they'll be up to speed when you get back after the year.

I'd say they'll probably learn loads more with a year away then they would through school.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, I met a couple who had a 7 year old and an infant at about 4000 metres in the himalayas, they had just got married and were bringing the kids on a round the world trip. They were carrying the baby by the way :).
I can't see why you wouldn't go but if your kids are fussy eaters it may well be an issue if you stray too far from McDonalds ;) Maybe start small and bring them for a month in Europe and see how they fair, if all's well head a bit further afield.

With the kids only in primary school,it should'nt effect them too much taking them out for a year and dropping back into the same class the next year. It's a really small school so they'll know kids a year behind them.Anyway only one of us can work (kids to look after) so home schooling is an option.
