Recntly Ive decided Id like to get a motorcycle. I share a car with my mother (im 20, 2nd provisional hoping to get full license soon) at the moment and while its great I always fancied the idea of a motrcyle. Ive always wanted a superbike and love the look of them but obviously being young(cash is tight) and being my first bike(ive never drove a bike in my life) I need something affordable and not too powerful. So I came across the aprilia rs 50 (and the rs 125) and was just wondering if anyone has any experience with this bike or advice on other models that might suit me. Ill be getting a second hand bike and was wondering what price should I be aiming to pay for a decent one and how much should I expect to be paying for Insurance. Thanks.

Although it is only a 50cc, be prepared to pay for the insurance, as Subway said they will be classed as Group 5.

Group 5 for an Aprilia RS 50? Bloody hell... :( In France they're considered mopeds and cost around €100 to insure...

if you want a sportish bike nsr 80 is cheaper all round

A rs50 is group 2 with Aon, not group 5. A rs 125 is group 7 with them

A nsr 80 is group 3, but the nsr 75 (same bike, just a different name) from 2003 is group 2!

Yamaha TZR 50 is also an option - about €3400 from megabikes. also try motomax (www.motomax.ie) - its also a group 2 with AON.

    Sorry, meant to say 2002.

OP, if you are lucky enough to be able to afford group 2 insurance, a nsr 75 is a better bet than the rs50, even tho the rs50 does look better. I had the nsr 75 for about a year, and for what it is, it's a great little bike

btw anyone know where you can get a list of bikes in the insurance groups? (electronically - i.e pdf)

If you go to http://www.planetfun.org/ and go to bike or scooter section, click on any of the manufacturers logos and then click on "pricing is here".

Sorry, I'd give a direct link if I could but the way the website is set up, I'm not sure how

It gives the groups of loads of bikes. I can't gurantee if it's up to date

Also, its seems an Aprilia RS50 is group 1, the same as a scooter

it quotes the rs50 as group 2

i mustve benn thinking of the rs 125 in my earlier post

That planet fun insurance listing is out of date. If you have any questions on what grouping a bike is, just ask here, one of us will be able to answer your question :)

its actually 01 for the cheaper insurance but a friend had a rs125 and said it was a very fragile engine needed special gear box oil dunno wat type i said it before and i'll say it again for a a1 catagory bike its got to be the varadero xl 125 as long as your not a short ass (no offence meant)

If you mean that it is actually 2001 for group 2 insurance on a nsr 75/80 then you are incorrect. It's definately 2002.

A rs125 is a very highly tuned 2 stroke machine, it is best to run it on fully synthetic engine oil. All 2 stroke machines need to be looked after properly and one as highly tuned as a rs125 would be a bad idea for a novice..........not to mention AON wouldn't insure him on it

Wow wasnt expecting so many helpful responses. Cheers for that lads. How much does group 2 insurance cost. Also Ive been having a bit of trouble finding a good example of an ncr80. Most bikes seem to be ancient Im coming across. Am I correct in saying Honda dont make them anymore? I would have thought they would have some sort of replacement model (low cc sporty bike) But I cant seem to find anything.

ring this number for aon 016059301 they are probily theonly ones that will quote you

honda do the cbr125 these days as the nsr "replacement"
although its more like a cg update as the bike is alledgely 0% fun.
mainly due to it being a 4 stroke instead of a 2 stroke.

maybe you should take a look for a derbi or cagiva?
