If you bought a brand new bike, would you expect your speedo to be MPH or KPH dominant? Or would you care?

KPH! KPH! Must be KPH! I'm delighted my '02 Bandit has a KPH speedo! I'm French so Miles/MPH are harder to understand... :o

KPH .......it's the denominatin your speeding tickets will be written in.

Been law here for years, btw.............my 02 bike - supplied new by Irish dealer - has KPH only clocks.

Mind you, so too has my Jap import car!!

I'd expect it to be in KPH, for analogue clocks, and switchable from MPH to KPH for digital clocks. If it's "brand new" with MPH clocks, it's old stock/something they couldn't even sell in the UK. I'd go and get an actual new bike from someone else.....unless, of course, they're doing you a good deal.;)
You're not getting it from Bikeworld, are you? They've had some stuff sitting on the shop floor for years. Mind you, I'm sure they're not alone on that score.

Got mine new in 04 before the change over and that was in KPH, so i wary of a new bike here with mph, I would ask the dealer why

    Ok, you're old fashioned !!

so, do you think you'd have converted the no before the camera flashed?? :D:D

And if it says 100 on the sign.........why would you want to convert it to 62 anyhoo??

A case of doing 'exactly what it says on the tin'........I'd have thought, no?

What if, very simply, the bike has just been imported from the UK? Saying that new bikes with MPH clocks are old stock isn't necessarily true me thinks...

would most cars and bikes that are for sale new in england have what we had before. Main dial in MPH and a small KPH. Thats what i was led to believe.

If not then it is only a simple case of new speedo which should be simple to fit same shape - setting etc. as they are available for ireland, france etc.

or else just a custom dial background. Get them on net.

Ehh, is that not what I was getting at with the "couldn't even sell in the UK" comment? Even so, why would a retailer import a brand new bike from the UK? (Yeah, there are probably a load of reasons which, not being in the trade, I don't know about, but Brain is too tired to think of any right now.) Most parallel imports come from continental Europe, I believe.
Meh, who cares. Personally, I wouldn't buy this bike, but there are a lot of people a lot less fussy than me. The better the deal, the smaller such details as the clocks become.
    "Very simply", indeed. Pshaw! ;)

yeah i wouldnt buy it either. .... but in all the excitment of getting a new bike, I didnt cop that it was MPH on it until i was 30 mins away from the shop.
Last time I will assume that any Irish distributor can do anything right. Now the distributor wants to charge me for the privilege of having the correct speedo on me bike:mad:

Can you not get a cheap KPH one online/eBay and sell your MPH one afterwards? Dealer prices are crazy...

had a look, none seem to be available.
but when you spend a fortune on a new bike, everything should be in order for the country u bought it in!!

Agreed. I thought of that as soon as I clicked on "Submit Reply" for my last post... Why should you pay extra to get a speedo in KPH? All speed related information in Ireland is in kilometres thus new vehicles sold in Ireland should have KPH speedos! Makes sense to me and you! I wonder if there's anything that can be done legally on this one...

Would be worth looking into it via Dept. Transport or even better SIMI (I know they are for cars but will be up to speed on laws about speedos) or MAG or someone.

Although if they sold the bike as an import, then prob nothing can be done.

Bike was bought as a "New Bike".. ..it was an import alright. Imported from the factory in japan. Chasin it with DOT alright...
Shoulda been more on the ball, and made sure the speedo needed to be replaced under warranty before i mentioned anything!

If the bike is marketed as a new "official bike" tehn teh clocks should be in kmph...as per the country it supposed to be officially imported into.
If it a parallell import it'll still be in kmph as per japan/europe.

If they've sold you an 04/05 uk bike only just registered, then that would explain it...but they've ripped you off compared to what you could have gotten it yourself for in uk.

Go back..ask wtf the story actually is with the bike and where it came from...and demand the clocks replaced at the very least(if you like the bike a lot)...failing that the small claims court and a false advertising claim may be an option.
