changed keyboard settings unknowingly.

    I just can't seem to remember how to fix this.

    When I hold down the backspace, space bar, directional arrows rather than going quickly it is going very slowly. It's REALLY annoying me.

    If anyone can advise I'd be grateful.

    Start > Control Panel > Keyboard > Repeat Rate

    Have you set any of the Accessibility options in control panel by any chance? There's one there, Filter Keys, that slows down repeat rate.
