Ex student here, the course has changed a hell of a lot since I was there so I'm not really qualified to advise you now, having said that though I assume that you are just leaving school so you have all the time in the world to play with. Give it a whirl and if you don't like it jump ship in a year.

Have you thought of going to NCAD, then after first year core, choose media. That is as good as photography. PM Fajitas he is doing that, I'm sure he wont mind you asking some questions.

I was looking at the C&G diploma at Griffith College ... this may be an option for you.

I have a friend who went through it. She says it is good but you have to be prepared to put the work in ... you get out what you put in sort of thing ...

The full time version is quite short (1-2 years) ...

I have no personal experience of it myself but through my own investigation I did get the feeling that the course is run by good people; but there is a lot of emphesis on Film and not enough digital; The digital module appears to be a bolted on after thought rather than one of the main modules.

There are of course similarities between these two media up to the point where a picture is taken and the principles of use of light and colour apply everywhere; but I do not agree with the philosphy that learning to work in film gives you a good grounding for digital; In many respects they are different.

I feel there is a lack of a good digital course in Ireland. Opinions on this would be welcome since I am still looking for one myself.

I hope to study photography properly some time as hopefully my other work will take me to the developing world. I have a few ideas of topics I'd like to cover, and how to go about it. But I'm not sure about what I've come to know of the Irish courses.

Griffith seems too basic and I'm not too convinced of the quality that comes out of there. DIT is well-established and seems to emphasise art photography over other forms, and some told me that's to the detriment of students' technical expertise (I wasn't so impressed with the work in this year's show). IADT seemed the most impressive to me because they concentrate on photography as practise and seem to let students pursue their own interests and styles, but there's something amiss in it (Unfortunately, I haven't got to see the IADT end of year show). I don't know about NCAD at all.

I did the degree in Fine Art in DIT, the photography was good for film work and thought the mechanics of it well. That was 6 years ago though.

Do the photogpraphy course in DIT rather than do media in NCAD. For a start you might not get into Media plus you'll have to spend the first year doing painitng and all sorts of other stuff plus they may try and force you towards working with video.

Anyone know if that 'd be any good?

may I ask, without been too nosey or deviating from the topic, what are you doing, workwise now?

Maybe when you are doing a course ,the people would be talking about digital during it .
I was thinking of doing the griffith college course ,I like the idea of film ,but the way things are now I'm sure half the class would be using digital and together something more than what was on the course could be got out of it.

Just a thought on it .

    Brian.

Hey! Back online again for a bit, NCAD is great, fantastic college and all. If you just want to be a photographer, journalism et al, then DIT is probably better, Media brings in film, computers, graphics, sound, installation and whatnot too. There is a great photography department in there, and the tutors are very good (One is friends with Thomas Knoll...have a look at the Start up photoshop ;) )

Pm me if you have any more questions!

I'm just going into 4th year in the IT Tallaght AV course. I love it, even thought its pretty broad. In 1st year you do one semester of audio and one of photography and the same in 2nd year. For 3rd year you choose between photography and audio. You do a good bit oh photoshop in 1st year too in design studies.

As far as I know the 1st years do a black and white film project and he had a colour darkroom when i was in 1st year but its since gone. The lecturer is really cool and nice too. the 2nd year one anyway.

Theres alot more emphasis on digital now and scanning and photoshopping or so I hear. I choose audio but still do photography in my spare time.

You have got to be prepared if you do the course to do a bit of each subject and put up with stuff you don't like eg script writing, Tv production and stuff. Its up to you to concentrate on one bit you like yourself and work hard at that.

if you have any other questions give me a PM and i'll try help.

Another plus is the pass rate is 35%
