    Hi,
I've got a 1.4 '00 Bora, I do around 350 miles per week, going from Ratoath to Sandyford and back. The thing is, I was considering changing to a diesel (probably another Bora or a Toledo), but I'm getting over 40mpg at the mo and I'm not sure if the diesel would be any better. Anybody got some thoughts about it?

If you're getting over 40mpg in a 1.4 petrol Bora then you'll probably get 60mpg in a 1.9TDI. Calculate your annual fuel costs at 350 miles per week for both cars, to see how much you would save with diesel. Then factor in the extra tax & insurance on the TDI. You now have your net savings on fuel per year if you change to diesel. I'd imagine the saving would be modest enough, maybe €400 or so? Diesels cost more to buy, but they hold their value better and residuals are less affected by high mileages. Another point - a 1.9TDI will have quite different driving characteristics to a 1.4 petrol.

    Hi Conlai,

I drive a 1.9 and do about the same weekly mileage as yourself. I average out at about 60mpg in my diesel. It's absolutely fantastic. I recommend the change from the 1.4 petrol to the 1.9 diesel. The change in power too is nice.
