The language school offers free courses as far as I remember... I got an offer to learn French, German or Irish for free in the evenings. Ask your tutor about it.

Yeah, there's a beginner's and an advanced course available to students, you *should* get a letter about it with your course details stuff when you're accepted. Apply early as they tend to fill up quickly.

True, French was full up by the time I applied... had to settle for Irish.

Germans not quite as popular as french and the classes tend to eb smaller. Had a particularily excentric woman teaching me german as an extra course for part of this year.

I did the introduction to German class when I was in first year, it was pretty good. My class was held on Monday evenings from 7-9pm as far as I remember, so you might want to make sure it doesn't clash with anything else. You could ring up the CLCS (Centre for Language and er, something Studies - the switchboard at 608 1000 will put you through) who organise the classes and they will be able to give you more information about it. As John mentioned though, all undergrads receive info about it before they start.

And for what it's worth, you get a nice certificate at the end of it, and the option to continue it in 2nd year. And I can now say "Where is the strawberry tree" in German, which is a nice party trick

    I AM THE MODERATOR.

iirc just meant "if i remember clearly".

no ones really quite sure what the BA(Mod.) means (at least no one i know - i can tell Daithi's gonna prove me wrong here) - its essentially the same as any other degree, but only here, oxford and cambridge give one. so *shrug*

can you take those language modules in SF year, if you don't do them in JF.
I couldn't do it last year cos it clashed with something else, but i'd love to do non-beginners german this year.

BA Mod. means you are a Bachelor of Arts with a moderatorship in *insert subject here* (i.e. a degree holder in *subject*). So even if you do a science degree, you get a BA Mod. in Neuroscience (for example ;))
