I have a VPN set up on my laptop so that when I am at home connected through wireless to my broadband, I still access the server and send and recieve through outlook. We also use Microsoft CRM which intergrates with outlook. All this works fine at home, but I am working out of a new office now and I'm having problems. There is an open wireless network, I can connect fine and browse the web etc. I can dial the VPN connection and connect fine, I am also connevt and use Microsoft CRM perfectly, however for some reason I cannot send and receive outlook.

I've tried everything but cannot work out why I am unable to connect.
Can anyone suggest what might be the problem, as its driving me mad.
    Thanks

This is a long shot, as it works from home for you but hey, give it a shot.

    Open your VPN connection properties.

    Networking -> TCP/IP -> Properties -> Advanced -> DNS

Click the radio button beside "Append these DNS suffixes (in order):"
Add your company domain name "abcltd.ie" or whatever.

Click OK all the way out. May need to restart your VPN connection.

From what you have said, it doesn't appear to be a DNS issue but ye never know. When you open Outlook, does it say it's connected or disconnected down the bottom right?

Firstly, you need to figure out what your mail server is (I presume it is an Exchange server). To do this go into control panel and select the mail icon, view existing e-mail accounts. It's in there somewhere.

Secondly, see can you ping it - at the command prompt, type ping <servername> obviously replacing servername with the Exchange server name.

Let us know how you get on.

OK cannot ping the server. And when outlook starts its says "Trying to connect"

You cant ping the name. Can you ping the IP address of the exchange server?

How do I find out what the IP address is?

good question, normally you'd ping the name........kinda a circular argument...

Do you not have any IT support on site at all?

You could get a colleague who can connect to ping the name and tell you the IP.

    Try nslookup <servername>

Ping should also give you the IP address.

When you find the IP, I'd try adding the Ip and name to your hosts file.
