Hey all am off to London for a few days and need some advice. Landing in Gatwick but need to get to Royal Victoria Dock. What price are the cabs like over there. Any place i need to see and need to avoid. I just heard the cabs can be pricey and i just dont fancy getting tubes or what ever else there is. Any help would be great.
    Cheers

you dont really need to get cabs as the tube is very easier to get around in. id advise you u 2 get the hop on hop off tour of the city. you get to see all the major sights fairly quickly and you can hop off if one takes your fancy.its a great city. nice people in general. loads of stuff to do for anyones interest.its been a while since i was there but goin back in november i hope

Taxis are very expensive in London. I'd expect to pay £80 - £100 to Royal Victoria Dock. Gatwick is a long way out of London - approx 50km.

While I realise that you do not want to use public transport ,it's much better and considerably cheaper.

Get the Gatwick Express train to Victoria Station (30 minutes). Transfer to Eastbound District or Circle line and go to 'Monument' then transfer to Docklands Light Rail to get to Royal Victoria Dock.

Id second having a go on the underground, print yourself a tube map online and work it out. Have fun.

Yup - not using the Tube to get around London is pretty much the definition of insanity. Even if you're not sure of what to do/where to go, the Underground staff and normally more than willing to help out. For Gatwick to your hotel, follow the advice given above.

Get First Capital Connect from Gatwick Airport to London bridge Station, transfer to Jubilee line and take it to canning town then transfer to docklands light rail.
This should be slightly quicker then the advice above since London Bridge station is closer to the docklands then victoria, the jubilee line is quicker then the circle or district, and changing at monument/bank station is a pain (it's a huge underground station with 5 tube lines and the docklands light rail). It's also slightly cheaper as First Capital Connect are cheaper then the gatwick express.

Cheaper and faster then any taxi. use the www.tfl.gov.uk journey planner

I agree with everyone who says you'd be mad not to use the tube. You can really only take proper advantage of the city with the tube and its a doddle!get yourself a weekly travelcard and really make an effeort to avoid the rush hour which is just horrible.

Climb the Monument, don't bother with London Eye. Walk across the Millenium Bridge from St Paul's and have a poke around Tate Modern, if you're not in to art just have a look at the turbine hall which you don't pay in to.
Check out Camden Market and Ladbrook Grove at the weekends. Go for a curry on Brick Lane. Have a look at the twats in Hoxton and go boozing in their trendy pubs. The British Museum. Sir John Soane's Museum. Drink ale, eat pie and mash.

You'll have a great time, but use the tube!
