What kind of Mac is this?

I've never owned a Mac, and can only really dream of doing so for the near future (I'm 16, so budget is a bit restricting). My friend did work experience for a graphic design company recently. They were replacing their old machines so when he left they gave him one  Needless to say, I want it. i haven't got a chance to see it yet, and he knows nothing about it, except that it's G4 and it's just a box (not monitor and all workings in one package). From my limited knowledge of Macs I can only think that this is a PowerMac. Does this sound right?

Also, I may actually be able to stop dreaming as he says he'd rather a PC. So I may end up upgrading his old PC at my expense and getting the Mac in return (a great deal, I think). He says it even has the software they used still installed on it (Photoshop, Quark, etc.).

Probably a mac mini G4.You can pick up a G5 or Intel(not sure if they have intel minis yet) for less than 600 euros so it's a nice budget option.

Thought a graphic design company would be using something a little more heavy duty than that. And they're more recent, so would they be getting rid of them already?

Well if it's a G4 it's not really that recent. As for mac minis not being powerful, they have upgraded the differant options. Then again,it could have been a powermac, but as I said before,if it's a G4 it's at least a few years old.

Sounds like either an old G4 tower which youll need to get a monitor for or its a G4 Imac.

Wouldn't say it's an Imac mate as he said it's just a box,and doesn't have everything inside.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking that it's a powermac :D

It sounds like either a G3 or a G4 Mac.
    G3: http://www.robreid.com/macintosh/G3/G3.gif
    G4: http://kopibutikken.no/mac%20G4.jpg

It's not going to be a MacMini as a design company wouldn't buy those for their work.
    /edit - ah right, it's a G4 Mac then. Well, that's you one above.

What about the G4 Cube? I know it was a flop sales-wise but it could still be one.
