Fan failure on a Dell - is my PC on the way out?

    Hi

I've a 4.5 year old Dimension 8200 which has served me pretty well to date, but last couple of times I've booted up I get a message saying "Previous Fan Failure".

When I examine the system event log, I'm getting a lot of "Out of Range events" for the Fan and the Temperature happening over the last couple of weeks.

I've downloaded SpeedFan 4.28 and the HD seems to start at 39C but climbs to 45C in 10 - 15 minutes - and seems to be continuing northwards!

I would imagine that this is a problem but is there anything I can do? Do I need a new fan or is it time to consider a replacement (and start some serious backing up!)

    Any advice appreciated. TIA.

    Gus

Your PC is not on the way out. Your fan is.

Replace the fan. Open the case, and see what size it is. It will be a standard size (40, 60, 80 or 120mm). Buy a new one in Maplins, and fit it in. Good as new.

Might be better to assertain what fan it actually is. If its a heatsink fan its very possible that its not a standard size (i.e. 70x70), and well if its Dell then for example it'll be great fun trying to get a 92x92x32mm fan.

... and Maplins - oh please. Not only were they exceptionally rude (then again that Luke guy always looks so p1ssed off), but looked at me like I was only there to annoy them because I was looking for an 80x80x15mm fan. No surprises I left empty handed.
