Speed fan is showing my HDDs at 52c and 41c....
it says that they are in and around the normal temp, but i opened my case to stick in a new GFX and the HDD nearly burnt the hand off me!!!

how much damage is it doing to them operating at these temps??

my CPU and GFX are both fine at between 34 and 37c....not bad for a p4 prescott!!

the fan on my lappy just broke and it heats up to burny temps very quickly. I assume thats bad, very bad, but how very bad?

'Expect your hard drive to die soon' bad

I don't like to see any temp over 55 degree's.

Have a rethink on the air flow and fan layout.

generally you want to keep your HD's under 39Deg. 41 is not great and 52 is way high.

Well it should shutdown when it gets to hot but you are inevitably causing damage to your cpu

Im persuming that the temprature of 55C is the CPU(Amd Athlon XP 2600+ 2.13 ghz) Is this normal? It seems way too high!

nah 52 is fine. my raptors usually run at 60 and have a 120mm fan blowing cold air on them.

Are you sure you dont have an airflow problem?

My 15K SCSI's dont even run that hot! Raptors naturally put out more heat than tarditional 7.2K drives, but its not a good idea to let them get that warm.

Have a look at the WD reccomended operating temperatures

They say 55Deg max operating across the board from the original 36Gb to the latest and greatest 150GB's.

Bear in mind your MTBF comes down exponentially for each unit of temp and you have yourself a problem.

That speed fan software is pretty cool, It says my 160Gb hard disc is operating at 30°C. I have done nothing in it only seen what temperature it is running at,

Would it be a good idea to let it installed or Uninstall it? I don't want it to go changing settings or anything I just downloaded it from here to what my HD temperature is for the craic. My PC is a Dell Dimension 8400 3.4 Ghz P4.

It is a damn handy tool for those who build their own etc.

ive had 4 of them about a year now, and they seem fine. i do have good airflow, 3x120mm fans just for the hdds. and 4x120mm taking air out.

My laptop hdd is hotter, 64c atm. burning the knees of me but what harm :)

Standard Fans that came with the comp. Three in total - PSU, CPU, Back of Case. Thats the Idle Temprature.

yyeah was thinking of hd fans, but more fans- more noise...... although it loks like its going to have to go down that route...or else buy some extenders for the psu leads cos they aint very long!!!

    humm...

also check for dust not a good thing in a pc(fire hazard) why not take a pic of the innards of the pc and post it up maybe the hdd is in a bad stop

What software is good to measure temperatres?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,469 ✭✭✭weeder

    speedfan the BEST

Speedfan is indeed a cool little program, I never knew that Hard disks have built in temperature monitors that could be read till I tried this last night. I had been using MSI's Corecentre but this is much better.

If you have a Dell though you may be out of luck as, typical for Dell, Speedfan doesn't work. It measures the HD temperature on my GX620 here, but nothing else. I hate Dell so much.

Anything under 80°C is absolutely fine.
