I have been told on these boards before that a car must have at least 6000km before it is exempt from VAT being charged which rules out buying a new car in the UK and making a big saving on it.

However what if there was a car that was over a year old yet still had less than 6000km on it? would this be eligible for vat? or is there a time cut off as well as the mileage cut off which means you are exempt from vat?

I hope that makes sense and any help is greatly appreciated!

    I think it's 6 months or 6000 miles.

Just get one of those milage correction lads to clock it up above 6000 and then get them to bring it back down after it's got the VRT paid. It's only a crime in this country to clock a car if when asked by a buyer you knowingly declare the milage lower, might as well stay on the side of the law :D

Are you sure you don't mean VRT ?? (after all VRT is all you have to pay if you're bring a car into the country isn't it.)

    no it ain't.

You pay VAT and VRT on all 'new' cars. ie those under 6k miles or 6 months. VRT only after that.
