Was messing around with the camera today and was wondering does the black and white setting on the 350 ,make the black and whites any better?

Or is it something raw can do ?

The sepia, B&W effects etc etc are just the same processing options that you get in RAW. Only the camera has some presets it uses before it writes and compresses the JPEG. The beauty of RAW is you don't have to worry about comitting to the right preset before compression. The best way to really get the best out of your pics is shoot in RAW then open the colour image in photoshop select your desired RAW settings but keep the saturation at default. Then use the LAB colour mode in Photoshop or the channel mixer etc to adjust the image. There are a number of different methods to do this, you can find many online tutorials on this.

So basically the camera setting automatically applies a desaturation effect to the image in its buffer and then writes it as a JPEG. Shooting in RAW give you total control over this process.

I personally prefer to shoot in colour, in raw and then later decompose to get some nice noise in the photo. You can see all of my black and white photos here if you want an idea.

    Thanks for the replies ,
I wasn't sure whether or not to start using it ,I won't bother now ,I use raw all the time ,I find when you zoom in on a raw you can't see the pixels.

    Thanks

    Brian.
