I had the same problem. Check above. Latest video/audio drivers, latest firmware on drive, etc...

Might be Ye Olde DMA Reverting Back To PIO Mode in the IDE controller settings in Device Manager. Happened to me when I got my DVD burner last year. There's about a million people who've already made guides on the net on how to put it back to DMA mode, so Google is your friend.

Sounds to me its spyware or some pain in the arse app that keeps checking for updates e.g. Acrobat.

Run a spyware killer; adaware is okay. Can run check for free...

Yes Learn to read, the DVDs play back but there jumpy picture and sound, And there just commerical DVDs that I'm playing that are the right region so thats not the problem.

After A spyware scan the problem presists, well I try something else.

I am almost certain it's that Windows is using the DVD drive in PIO mode like I said. Here's a random guide to fix it: http://xmixahlx.com/oldsites/soniccompression/dma.html

(That guide shows a rather convoluted way to get to the Device Manager though - it's much easier to just press Windows key + pause, or Properties on My Computer, then go to the Hardware tab)

Check if any of your IDE Controllers are set to PIO mode if they are, uninstall them, reboot and then install them again.

Don't need to uninstall them - as that guide (and many other guides) said, you can just change the setting in Device Manager, and after a reboot it'll work. It's worked every time for me, and it happened to me on one of my PCs yesterday!
