Advice needed for external CD / DVD drive

A bit of advice needed. I've a 12 in Powerbook which has blown its CD drive. It is out of guarantee and it's going to cost over € 300 to replace the internal drive. So, I need to get something external. Additionally, the Powerbook isn't the DVD version so can I add a DVD writing / reading option to the requirement? Do I need to download some bit of software for the Mac to recognise and accept a DVD concept?
I love the Powerbook but I am hamstrung through the demise of the CD drive.
Can you give me some recommendations as to an external drive?
    Thanks

    Val

The only issue there used be with external drives was compatability with iLife apps like iTunes, iDVD etc not being able to write to non Apple installed units. I think now though this isn't an issue since Tiger. Programs like Toast and Popcorn will be fine though.

On replacing the internal drive have you checked around ? I have a link somewhere about replacing/upgrading the internal drives of all Apple computers, I'll post it later when I get home.

Look for Lacie. They're one of the standard Mac-related manufacturers. You should find one of those to take your fancy.
