I've been asked in work to find out how many IT compainies there are in Ireland, and more specifically Dublin. Does anyone knnow how I would go about finding this information? We need to find out how many compaies do general IT services and resell products such as software and/or hardware. I know you can buy lists from Kompass etc, but can I get at lelast an indication of numbers anywhere for free?
    Thanks

    I doubt it.

What constitutes an "IT" company is your first hurdle. Plenty of companies may be classed as "IT" when in fact they have little if anything to do with IT - security system installation companies, for example.

I assume you've been tasked with coming up with a rough estimate, and then breaking that down into rough percentages of who does what.

Some of the Government departments may be your best bet - revenue, cro, et al. But you may be better off just buying the information.

revenue wont tell you anything, the cro literally provides lists of directors of limited companies, in fact any info you get in detail will be about limited companies, but you wont get feck all about there service

how much is kompass using, if its for your job surely they'll pay for it!

I think this is only foreign companies based here but it's a start:

You used to be able to look up the Kompass directory in the Ilac Centre Library for free /Hint.

There many small IT companies/customers in Dublin. This can mean a lot of churn until a customer finds a company that suits them.

As for resellers - ask a distributor ?

you could contact recruitment agencies too and ask them for their IT client list.

Enterprise Ireland or FAS may have an idea as well.
Kompass is never quite "up to date".

You can get a "free" trial from Kompass and they will give you 50 credits or so to play with. Be warned thouigh they'll keep ringing you until you tell them to go away.

You could also look here if it is numbers you are after. You can drill down and get numbers without having to buy. Account set up is free. But they wil pester you to buy with "gentle reminders"

There are about 900 IT resellers in the country, so say at least 400 in Dublin.

Now some of them are one man bands, and others like Cara, Calyx, Datapac etc. have up to 200+ people.

There are only about 50 large resellers, with everyone else being very small.

    Hope that answers your question.
