.......no not really, but recent All Black announcement of a completely different match 22 for the Pumas match as opposed to that which we played last week got me thinking.

Lets imagine some horrendously apocalyptic chain of events resulted in the removal of the current first XV from the scene (touch wood, god forbid and all that), I dunno kidnapped by a baby hungry bunch of D4 rugger-huggers or somethin', use your imagination.

Where would Irish rugby go from there? What for example would be the team to take the field for the next six nations? Any suggestions? Feel free to search the globe for Kiwis, Boks, Samoans, Fijians, Romanians, Wallabies or whatever with Irish grannies lurking in their closet......

Assuming you mean a plane carrying the current team and not anyone injured or unselected, I suppose the bulk of the team would be made up of the current A side, added to maybe by some u21's. Then Bob Casey, Jonnie O'Connor, David Humphries and players like Trevor Brennan, Shane Byrne, Kevin Maggs.

All hypothetical of course, (please God something like this would never happen) but there's a decent crop of young players coming through, and with a few old heads thrown in for guidance they could be back at a very high level within a few years.

It's interesting to consider though because if we are going to launch long WC run we need contingencies for every position.

Needless to say that Drico & POC would survive!!

We could put together an Irish team that could beat the minnows or even Italy but the 'Playmakers' like Drico, Murphy and Darce would leave a giant gap which couldn't be filled any time soon.

Similar to the Manchester United tragedy that happened in Munich! It took them years to rebuild their entire structure!!

What about Brian Carney currently of Newcastle Knights ARL and late of Wigan? Absolutly prodigous rugby talent in my eyes. Pound for pound one of the best rugby players we've ever produced.Put a question to him on the BBC's rugby league site today re: converting to union, get that guy on the wing and watch the try count soar. Interestingly said had conducted talks with the IRFU in the past but decided union not for him.

Intriguingly says would like to finish his career playing union in Italy for some bizarre reason. reckon the union should be picking up the phone again. indeed Munster could do worse than give him a tinkle......

Carney is very explosive, and would definetly be exciting to see in an Irish or provincial shirt. But that ship has probably sailed.

The IRFU never came close to offering the terms to him that league did. I think we was reasonably well disposed toward coming back to Ireland a few years back.

I'm sure all would be forgiven by BOD if the airline offer him an advertising gig:D
