I'm in Boston for the summer and I've managed to lose my passport and attached J1 visa. Stupid, I know, but it happened.
There's an Irish consulate here in the city and I'll give them a ring tomorrow.
Has this kind of thing happened to anyone before? Anyone know what the procedure is? I have photocopies of the passport and visa so hopefully that should help.

The fact that you have A photocopy will help somewhat,

now that your there, it shoulnt be too hard to get an emergancy passport from the counculte ( spelling?)

You can get a new passport from the consulate.

You don't need A new J-1 visa but rather a replacement I-94 (Form with J-1 written on it and stamped that was put in your passport at immigration check). You need this to prove your status for work and for a social security card and to properly record your departure when you leave the country. To get a new one, send a photo copy of the biopage of your passport off to the local USCIS district office with form I-102 http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/formsfee/forms/i-102.htm and a fee of $160.

A J-1 visa (sticker with photo) is only needed if you intend to enter the united states in the future in J-1 status (e.g. if you fly back home to ireland for exams and need to re-enter to work). It can only be applied for at a U.S. embassy outside the United States.

It would be a lot harder had you not got a photocopy, so it will probably cut down the processing time a great deal. Hope you get it sorted out soon.

Thanks for the advice. Looks like that I - 102 form is the way I'll have to go.

I still have no idea how I managed to lose the thing. Costly mistake too. $160 to "file a form"?! I guess someone has to fund the war on terror. Still though, could be worse.

    Thanks again..

Good news! I found the feckin thing!!

After some serious brain picking and step retracing, I remembered the last place I had it!
Don't you just hate when you lose something and everyone says "Well, where was the last place you had it?.."

Anyway, it showed up in a trolley at a supermarket a few blocks from my appartment where I went to buy a few pizzas two weeks ago.
    Can't believe my luck. :)

    Jammy sod!!

Stupid question, why are you carrying a passport to go shopping and even more importantly, why put it IN the trolley?? :D

If you look under 50 and are buying beer in the US, you will need to show some form of ID to prove your age. Probably the only form of ID Teg had.
