When I turn on my computer I get this message saying file missing or corrupt. The file in question is \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
I'm using XP, i've tried starting in safe mode but still nothing. Any ideas greatly appreciated. I can format the HD and re install XP but I don't want to lose stuff I've saved on the computer emails etc.

you could try using the system restore option in the pre xp startup menu

a backup of that file is in c:\windows\repair

just boot into cmd prompt and copy the file over

if that that does n't work, don't format your hard drive, boot from the xp cd and choose the repair option, the worst that happens is you have to install a few microsoft updates

I tried alot of things but nothing worked so I had to re-install XP. I have a new problem now when I'm scrooling up and down pages the screen is flickering\re-drawing, it didn't do this before I re-installed XP. Its a laptop I'm using so its a tft screen. Any ideas what could be causing it to flicker\re-draw?

You havent reinstalled your graphics card. You won't be able to play games or watch movies without it...as well as being limited in resolution

I think Havok means you haven't installed your graphics card drivers. You should look for drivers online for your audio, chipset, network card and modem (if you have one/use it) too, and make sure Windows is up to date, as even with a fresh install of SP2 there's probably at least 10 serious security holes between Windows itself and IE!

Definately your display drivers. Goto your laptop manufacture's website and download the drivers from there. You may need to grab other misc utilities to restore your laptop to the way you got it as laptops tend to have a crap load of manufacturer utilities installed by default (to handle Fn keys, external display and media keys etc.) You don't really need them all, but if you're used to having them, they may be worth getting.
I found Toshiba's battery monitor utilities alot better than the default crap with Windows when I did the same thing on my laptop.
Also, if you're still using IE, ditch it and get Firefox (dot com).

    Digi.
