New PC Build

This may seem like 'cheating' but my brother needs a new PC and has about €2200 to spend on it. So if someone feels like visiting the Komplett custom-built PC page and putting one together I'd be interested in what you'd get.

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/config.asp?ConfigSystemId=10090

    1. Komplett only offers Socket-939 motherboards but to be honest he's unlikely to upgrade for a long time and cal always pick up a faster 64 FX-60 processer in the future if he wants.

    2. As it's being used for gaming and recording his guitar tracks the soundcard must be the best on offer, thus the choice of the Creative SB X-Fi Elite Pro PCI.

    3. Overclocking isn't his thing, not is getting the best memory modules money can buy for that extra little bit of performance.

I was thinking of this (some small stuff left out)

    Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, nForce4 SLI,
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0GHz Socket 939
    Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2 DDR-DIMM 2048MB
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB SATA2

    POINT OF VIEW GeForce 6800GT 256MB GDDR3
    Seasonic S12 Powersupply 500W, 120mm
    NEC DVD±RW burner, ND-3550A, 16x,
Creative SB X-Fi Elite Pro PCI,
    Samsung 19" LCD Syncmaster 913N TCO03

    Anything wrong with this setup?

I wouldn't waste money on the SLI board if he is not going to use it.

This is what I would get for a total €1935

Tagan Easycon 430W, Modular Cables, (great PSU with detachable cables)
    Gigabyte GA-K8NMF9, nForce4
    AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4GHz Socket 939
    TwinMOS PC3200 DDR-DIMM 2048MB Dual Pack Kit (cheaper 2GB)
Point of View GeForce 7900GT 256MB (way better graphics card)
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB
    NEC DVD±RW burner, ND-3550A
Creative SB X-Fi Elite Pro PCI
Samsung 19" LCD Syncmaster 940BF (better display)

Ok, so skip the Sli and use the spare cash to get the 7900GT ?

    Looks good....

That display only outputs to 1280x1024, so the 7900GT might actually be overkill. Pity they don't have the "silent" 7800GT's anymore...
That said, if you were going for a 7900GT, I'd get the XFX for only €8 more; lifetime warranty FTW!
    And for my money, I'd go with a Seasonic powersupply - there's a 430W for €75.

Also consider a 2nd harddrive, either same again for RAID, or a Raptor :p
A second CD-R(W) for his work wouldn't be bad, either.

Also, not sure but this might be worth a look (even if just reviews):
    Terratec SoundSystem Aureon

You can use lots of AA and AF at 1280x1024 in games with a 7900GT along with high details so that's a very good reason to get one : )

I'm not sure about the XFX 7900GT listed it's one of those "Xtreme" kinds & there have been failures with those cards due to them being overclocked too much out of the box.

I've only once had a problem with an XFX product, and it was cleared up rapidly with their Double Lifetime Warranty.
