Am thinking about going to Dubai in August. Ive heard conflicting reports, some saying its very dear, other saying its cheap. I am hoping to do it cheap enough, possibly 1000 euros for a week. Could anyone tell me in general is cost of living cheap (eating out, drinking etc..)

Depends entirely on where you eat. You can eat in local Arabic restaurants for a few Euros and the food is really good quality, or you could spend a few hundred Euros at the Burj Al Arab.

Generally, Dubai is not that expensive for food and drink (Especially if you think what a pint would cost in a nice hotel in London or Dublin).

Don't worry about the heat, they are well setup for it.

You might be surprised. A lot of people are opting for breaks out there due to cheap flights without realising how excruiatingly hot it can become.

I'm just back from Dubai and I loved it but if possible I would avoid going from May - August - it's just unbearable hot - high 40's. If I was going back (and I will at some stage) I'd go around February when the temp is in the 20's. That's just a personal choice though.

If you go in August it's considered off-peak so the hotels will be cheaper than other times of year.

It's very reasonable to eat out if you go somewhere that doesn't sell alcohol - about 30/40 for a couple and the food is fantastic. Generally the higher class of hotel you're visiting the more expensive the food. We ate in the Jemirah Beach Hotel - dinner for two, starters, mains and a bottle of wine - 130 euro and it was basically steak and chips. A really nice place we ate in wasthe Noodle house which is in the Emirates Towers hotel - great food and cost about 30 for 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 minerals.

Taxi's are pretty reasonable which is good because you need to get taxi's everywhere. Loads of shopping centers - all the same price as here. Alcohol costs the same as here so 1000 spending money for a week will be loads.

    Enjoy!

Just a couple of quick points -

The heat in June/July is tolerable. I was in Dubai last July, stayed at Le Meridien Dubai. I spent a bit of time in the sun, some time on the pool and some time in the shade. Everywhere has aircon, I get a better nights sleep in the middle east in July than I do in Europe.

Peeps who are thinking of going to Dubai, just give Abu Dhabi a look as a place to stay. No congestion, No building work and only just over a 1 hour drive from Dubai and the hotels are quite a bit cheaper.

We are off to Muscat to the Bar al Jissah resort in July. Let you know what it is like.

Dubai - ah great place, was there for the Rugby 7's in December.

Get yourself a Lonley Planet guide and you'll be sorted. The most expensive thing I found there was the accomodation. They don't really do 'cheap hotels' as such. . .I however found one, the IBIS Hotel (EUR 70 a night for a room, up to 2 adults). . www.accorhotels.com. . its part of the chain so is good, some of the other independent ones can be a bit dodge.

Have a look at www.tripadvisor.com aswell (this site works for any destination worldwide).
