I havent had much luck meeting people and am wondering if anyone has any advice on how to make new friends when traveling alone.

Im moving into a new apt in a few days with some people i dont know so hopefully we will get along.

Have you been staying in a hostel for the last couple of weeks?

We stayed in a hostel when we first got to Oz and met lots of people. Altho there were two of us so maybe it was easier to make friends...?

Im sure you'll get along grand with your new housemates. But my advice is if you dont get on with them go and stay in a hostel in whatever city you are settled in, Irish generally are drawn to other Irish people when they hear the accent.

Not that you want to meet a load of other Irish but you know what i mean, its a conversation starter.

    Good Luck!

I left for New Zealand by myself. I made some good friends over my time here. TBH if you are in a hostel just put in the effort to talk to everyone. Most people usually respond in kind and their are plenty of people travelling solo who usually always respond well.

See, the not staying in hostels thing would be the one thing that stands out - hostels are the best places to make random mates to hang around with a bit really.

Study the social skills of other sole travellers. Travelling alone differs in different cultures and asking others about what works for them should do the trick.

Australia must be one of the easiest places to make social contacts, speaking from personal experience. France is one of the most difficult.

Making some new friends just netted me $800. lol.

I play alot of poker and met a few people who told me about a tournament. I entered and won 800 for 3rd place.

I would like to go to OZ as well, but i would probaly be in the same boat as yerself, as i don't know anyone that would go with me (I have lost touch with everyone I knew in the last few years..) So let us know how you get on over there,i'm sure you will get on grand

p.s. ok so heres a stupid question, but what is a hostel like, i.e. do you share your own room with other people, or do you have a seperate room, self catering or does the landlady make the dinner? just wondering cos i've never stayed in a hostel
(Hmm i wonder if it is anything like the Film 'Hostel' ;) )

Also how are things on the jobs front? I hear that it is hard enough getting jobs straight off the boat in Sydney compared with the other major Austrailan cities, two fellas i know over there with over 2 months are still bumming around looking for a job..
