    .. and windows media player wont support them. says i need a codec. what's that?

    Then don't download videos until you know what you're doing.

    A codec decompresses the video, allowing you to see it. What codec you need depends on what one compressed it.

    Naughty naughty, downloading TV shows. Google for k-lite mega codec pack or Gordian knot codec pack. They both contain just about all video and audio codecs and will most certainly work for you.
