Google and download a program called G-Spot, or Gspot or something. It'll be able to read the movie information and tell you what codec is needed.

Divx and xvid are a good start though.

Google can help you find the G-spot? Is there nothing it can't do?

Randomly getting codecs from websites can leave you with spyware or other nasty stuff. If you get VLC media player here:

    www.videolan.org/vlc/

it will play 99% of anything you download.

Bingo. It works on all video files I've used.
