I am looking to get a book or two on composition and persception of light etc.
Is there any paticular author or publisher that is best,i am sick of reading what I have already and need a bit more.

I tried the internet ,but when it comes to taking stuff in properly ,I'm more of a book person.

Any ideas ??,I'm hoping to do a course in a couple of months ,but I really need some mind food at the moment.

    Thanks.
    Brian.

I just had a wee look at amazon and there's a guy called Lee Frost who I recognise from the mags - he does amazing landscapes - he's got a load of different books about creative techniques and approaching composition and stuff like that, now I'm not sure how his teaching is but I know his pictures are fabulous. The reviews seem fairly positive, in the absence of knowing any particular book sto go for I'd be inclined to look these up. Just do a search on amazon.ie for 'lee frost' and you'll get the list of them, see what you think.

P.S. They are all geared towards film and darkroom so you won't get any photoshop tips though

Bryan Petersons Understanding Exposure is supposed to be excellent for the whole exposure side of things. I don't have it myself, but it's on my shopping list. You'll probably have to look elsewhere for books on composition though.

When I started out I found John Hedgecoe's books very handy. I had two and cant remember the exact titles now, but so many new ones have come out since anyway... checkout this list for some, most of them should be good I reckon.

I agree, John Hedgecoe's books are really good. In Eason's you'll find few of them. Best would be to go there and check them out.

This is the best lightening book I have ever read, its more to do with the science of light and how we perceive it but is written in a photographers view point, it is well illustrated with before and after pictures. Once you understand the principles they will apply all aspects of photography. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, professional or non.

Thanks Heff and Rymus ,I have a feeling the book your talking about heff ,is going to be a pocket burner in town ,might end up ordering it on the net.

The bryan peterson ones look more affordable :)

Absolutely nothing in town ,really dissapointing.

Tried Easons (O'Connell St) ,hodges Fidges ,waterstones and a few small ones.
Very dismal selection of books on photography ,but I was almost sure hodges Fidges selection has shrunk since the last time I was there.

    Whats amazon like ?

Thanks for your help with this.

That's disappointing. I had been looking forward to having a squiz at the weekend myself.

I think in order ot get stuff delivered to ROI you have to use www.shopireland.ie rather than amazon, but I think it links into the same site inthe end, I'm not sure. We used amazon loads back in scotland and it was good.

Thanks Elven ,will go there so ,it's a pity having to order over the internet ,I like walking around book shops ,not that I'm an avid reader ,it's just theres something special about them.

Ordered mine through amazon.co.uk ..... no problem at all. I think it is just electrical goods that they won't deliver to Ireland... anyways, books are not a problem.
