I love Boston. It's a bit expensive by US standards, but with the Euro still strong, that should not bother you too much. Smaller and cleaner than NYC, but with pretty good public transportation. Also on the coast if you want to do a day or two of lying on the beach.

Boston is wonderful! I'm doing my post graduate studies at a university in Cambridge and am actually flying there tomorrow morning for the new term.
Boston is more expensive than the average US city, but there's plenty to see and do there. Boston is one of our oldest and most historic cities. You can walk the Freedom Trail, which is lined with monuments and museums about the role Boston played in the War for Independence. There is also a monument to Irish immigrants along the trail. Harvard and MIT campuses are in Cambridge. Harvard Square is amazing - great night life and a very young, college crowd. Harvard Campus, which is open to anyone, is stunning.
Downtown Boston has wonderful shopping and restaurants. The Harbor is awesome too.
I'm arriving for term early so I can do some more exploring. Good luck with where ever you end up!

If it is your 1st time visiting the States i would recommend NY or Chicago ahead of Boston.
I agree with the above posts and i love Boston aswell(bit like Santa Ponsa with the amount of Irish there) but i think you'd find much more to do in the other cities.
Nightlife is OK. Most places close at 2am:(
