WARRSAN, winner of four Group 1 events, died on Monday night after a short illness following complications resulting from a tumour.

The eight-year-old, twice successful in both Epsom's Coronation Cup and Germany's Grosser Preis von Baden, was retired early this season due to a leg injury.

Connections had hoped at that stage to find him a place at stud for next spring.

The son of Caerleon, who registered nine victories in all, was being cared for at the time of his death by staff at Clive Brittain's Carlburg Stables in Newmarket and vets from the local practice at Rossdales.

Brittain said: "It is an absolute tragedy that Warrsan was unable to go on to the life that he so richly deserved as a stallion. He was one of the family at Carlburg and we will miss him."

Saeed Manana, Warrsan's owner, said: "I would like to thank all those who tried so hard to save him but, unfortunately, it was not to be. I feel so sorry for Clive Brittain and all his team who loved him as much as I did."

Warrsan's first win came off a mark of 75 in a Sandown handicap in July 2001 but, after scoring again in that grade at Goodwood the following year, he steadily climbed the ladder in conditions events and Pattern-race company.

He travelled the world in pursuit of big prizes, running last season in the Japan Cup and the HongKong Vase, and was being prepared for a bid to land a third Coronation Cup when an injury to his near foreleg brought a halt to his distinguished career this April.
