Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Why are they called improvised explosive devices? I mean, they do a pretty decent job at it and I'd hardly call it improvised?

It's because Americans LOVE three letter acronyms.

Perhaps yes... plus the first hit when I googled IED sorta cleared it up for me :D

Because they're usually artillery shells used as improvised land mines.

IED's were called IEDs long before Iraq. It's "improvised" because they are made of components and materials not intended for that use (artillery shells, mobile phones, remote control car parts etc etc).
