WSOP vs EPT

I had originally budgeted $50000 dollars for my trip to the WSOP but recently so many people are telling me that there’s no value in the tourneys and even less in the bigger cash games ($10/$20 +) during the festival. That got me to thinking… Would I be better off just buying into all the 6 EPT events plus the Monte Carlo final? Personally, I think there would be a lot better exposure in playing the EPT's. Would love to hear everyone’s opinions – especially people who have played both already…

My first wsop trip this year, but talking to a lot of the guys that were there last year playing cash 2/5nl+ the cash games are meant to be super soft.

A guy I played loads with on Crypto who was winner in the 5/10 there told me he made about 30% of his years profit in 5 weeks in vegas.

If I were you I would make the vegas trip but take a smaller budget, I am planning on taking about 20k and if I go busto on it the I go busto. But saying that I dont have the hassle of having to stump up a main event entry fee :D

If you go to vegas realistically you will probably still play the EPT events.

If you want exposure Flipper... Then I'd say play in five WPT tourneys. Fields are around the 300 - 400 mark and they suit aggresive play. You make a final table and you'll have more exposure than you could dream of.

And as Mr P says you know you'll play the ept's anyway. [Most are 5k this year]

    Kieran,

Ive been thinking about this over the last while and leaving out the exposure issue (which doesnt concern me) Im not sure , I was talking to Fatboydim before the WPT in Mandalay Bay and he felt it was much better value with circa 350 runners and a reasonable chance of winning (well when compared to the wsop)

At the time I agreed with him but now I think I disagree If you looked at the field for the wpt (and the ept is the same except a european version) its a who's who of poker and to come through that field is going to take some going. On the other hand the main event at the WSOP is genuinely full of interent qualifiers who havent palyed live or at least played feck all live and the field is just a lot easier. I played last year and got to the second day when to be honest at that time my poker game wasnt good enough to be in the competition. I am really looking forward to this years as I feel I have improved over the last year.

The standard at the Boyles and Paddy Power Open is well ahead of the main event as far as Im concerned. So if you ask me if i was to pay 10k into an event i would pick the main event even though i know chances of winning are lower I do feel chances of a decent cash are considerabably higher.

Pat makes a very valid point. WPT was toughest field and toughest tables I've ever played on. It made Vienna seem like a CPT outing.

    :D LOL :D

I think it was all the talk about the $1500 events being more like $10 freezeouts that put me off it more than anything else. Going to try and qualify 3 times this week:
    • Ladrokes (tonight)
    • Tribeca (Friday - i think)
    • Pokerstars (Sunday)

If I can't do the business in one of them, I'll review the situation further.

As for the WPT's, I was tempted to go to the one in Paris but it clashed with the Poker Million. Anyone know if the WPT is DEFINATLY in City West next year or is that only a fairytale? My next trip is going to be the Blue Square Super 6 event in the UK.

I heard this rumour too, but haven't heard anything since. I know the WPT announced their provisional lineup for next season and it didn't include a tripto Ireland in that anyways.

I've also heard a lot of the top players wont play in the WPT events, due to the pre-contracts, where you give up all your image rights forever. So if you play one event and get knock out in the first hand and than win the WSOP Main Event the following month, they can use your face to promote there tourneys and you get nothing for it.

This is why the likes of raymer etc dont play WPT events anymore, I could be totally wrong on this point........

I've also heard, that a lot of players think the EPT becomes a bit of a crapshoot in the later stages, (doesn't this happen to most events). I watch a lot of this years events on tv and the standard was only ok, again the fields were nothing like the fields in the US and the money in the US was about 25% better.

If I had the choice, I would be playing fulltime in the states, thats where the money and fish live. If you follow the likes of Devilfish and Tong G, they mostly play the US events. I heard the full-tilt crew did an adverisement for Pepsi, now thats big money.

All true. Except DevilFish. His contract with UB means he has to play alot in Europe.

Raymer only plays the WPT PCA (Pokerstars Carribean Adventure) for obvious reasons.

Chris Ferguson wasnt allowed to play the WPT Championship this year because of the image rights deely.

The final tables of the WPT turn into a bit of a crapshoot, whereas the WSOP final tables have far bigger stack to blind ratios than the WPT.

Saw the pepsi add briefly. Negranu and Hellmuth playing against a can of coke. Terrible add lol.
