Check-in times for UK

I'm flying to England next week, and I'm wondering how early is it required to check-in before the flight departs.

Eg - US would normally be 2 hours before flight time.

Seems to be that the standard post-check in time is 2 hours, wondering if this applies also to UK (or is the whole thing just a guidline anyway)

I normally checkin about an 1 1/2 before flight time to be safe, Aer Lingus and Ryanair both have the self service check in machines now and Aer Lingus recommends that you checkin 2 hrs 30 for UK and Europe (3 hours 30 for US) mins before flight time.

There's many a time where I checked in 30 or so mins before hand but I would NOT recommend that.

40 mins is the max allowance but better get there with plenty of time to spare
