I finally got around to setting up FTP on my Apple Airport express and it works no problem except that the file transfers are insanely slow at 300Kb/s! Anyone any idea how to fix this as the Mbps for the Airport Express is 50MBps

    cheers.

Is this an internal FTP transfer or from an external site? And you may not be getting the full 54mbps that the airport offers. This is the theorectical max, in reality it can be about 20mbps, less if you are some distance away.

Internal network. The airport is right beside me so 50Mbps.

Maybe server is limiting speed to 300K. If you use a ethernet cable to connect do you get a faster speed?

    yes I do.

    What speed do you get?

    downloading 5files at 1mb/s each.

Link speed is the fastest possible transfer rate in one direction. Throughput is the rate at which data is actually transfered.

The difference can be from protocol overhead (up to 10%), the fact that WiFi is only half duplex, so download bandwidth will be reduced by uploaded data (which is not very much on a streaming video), Error retrys/retransmissions which normally mean low signal strength, interference, etc.

On your streaming, is your source wired or wireless? If it is wireless to wireless, that cuts the potential throughput in half because a packet goes from the source to the AP where it is buffered and then retransmitted to
    the destination.

Yes it's wireless. Ah so that's the reason. No way to increase it even a tad?

You'll only get circa. 22Mbs from a wireless radio, trying to run an FTP server over it wouldn't be advised. Good luck anyway...
