I am a very healthy young woman who is good to her body but lately I just feel so under the weather. Here comes the toilet talk im afraid...

Basically normally I empty my bowels once a day if not twice sometimes, but the past month I am lucky to go once twice a week. I have looked at my diet and there is plenty of roughage and lots of water, fruit etc. which provide good fibre. One negative thing tho is my Dad just got a BBQ and I have been eating a bit more meat than normal. I know I have a very slow metabolism, but once a week is not normal IMO

Its been a vicious circle the past 3 weeks, I dont go all week then I get a massive dose of the runs at the weekend followed by being bunged up again. The above may sound silly but I am feeling tired and my body feels so heavy, its really getting me down. Even strong coffee and espresso's which bby god make me go all day do nothing. Its like my bowels have given up the ghost..

    Charming.

Meat is slow to go through your system, however fruit etc is not. Unless you're eating an ungodly amount of animal carcass you should see what you're seeing.

Possibly what is happening is that you're actually cutting down on the amount of food you eat and you "think" you're eating more? Whats your rough daily intake?

Look at modifying your diet and if you are still not happy go to your dr it could be the sympthoms of a range of issues.

Maybe give one of those Sennacot type products that have ads springing up all over the place these days?
Take a pill at night & then let it work overnight & flush you out in the morning.
Try giving it a go for 2 weeks & see if it brings you back to your regluar flow.

    Thanks for the advice guys.

Epicpriest - I dont eat a masive amount to be honest. I eat 3 square meals a day and snack on fruit throughout the day. I think i eat enough for my height and weight although i am slightly underweight.

Is it possible to suddenly develop IBS??

Im trying to avoid taking laxatives but seeing as coffee is not working i might have to give it a whirl..

I am under a bit of stress and feeling slightly down so i think that might also be contributing to it. I just wonder where all the food im eating is going. For instance I have not gone since Saturday and I dont feel particularly bunged up and dont feel the urge to go the toilet, at all..

    Hi,

Do you take any supplements? In particular iron? if so try comming off it for a little while as it can often back you up a good bit!!

The likes of Senacot sounds good but be careful that you don't become dependant on it.

Syrup of figs or flax seed are more natural movers (u'll get them in any big supermarket e.g. Tesco or health food shop)

I also find that if you have a supper of weetabix or bran flakes it usually helps to keep things regular.

Hope this helps and things start moving!!

We must have been typing at the same time!!!

If you had IBS you would know about it. Generally IBS is characterized by pretty bad stomach cramps (pms cramps don't even compare to these), not just constipation.

    Yup best advice so far.

Other than that all i'll say is stop drinking coffee, its not good for you

Are you drinking enough water? 3-4 liters a day is good, helps flush out the system. Add a lemon to it as well! I don't see you mentioning vegetables! Brocolli is the best, I normally have it for luch, some days also for dinner. Spread out the meals, 5-6 smallish portions is better for the body than 3 large meals. Easier for the body to digest.

Stay away from the coffee, tea and alcohol for a week or so.

Yeah I am due a trip to Doc for my pill so I will mention it to him.

I was thinking of going on Pharmaton cause i feel so run down but they could make my contipation worse so I think I will stick to my Berocca (which is all I take).

I was off coffee for ages but am dependant on it again because of the contipation.

Its driving me mad knowing a weeks worth of toxins are in my bowel, for all my healthyness i feel like crap. I dunno why i bother, my sister eating nothing but rubbish and ****es 3 times a day the lucky cow..

WOW!! 3-4 litres!!! that sounds like an awful lot of peeing!!!

The general guideline is 8 glasses (8 x 200ml = 1.6L) or you may have read 'up to 2L' per day. Take a peep at the likes of the VHI site and you'll see the recommendation on water consumption in their Health/Diet section (not 100% sure what the link is called)

I'm not looking to contradict or argue but there is such a thing as too much water and it results in the salt and suger concentrations in you body becomming so diluted that it can make you ill.

Sorry if it's a little off topic but there's no point in causing further health problems! :)

I regularly drink up to 4 litres of water a day and find it essential to keep everything in order. My digestive system can be a little irregular also despite what seems like a good diet. It's not uncommon but can make you feel really sluggish and slow.

The best approach is to consult your GP.

It's def the meat. If you were doing atkins it'd be the same story.

You're taking in more fat and protein, but the same amount of carbs etc, so your bod's probably a bit confused. The only thing is to stop. I mean, if you're getting plenty of roughage and drinking loads of water, then laxatives/senocot (whatever) will prob do more harm than good.

Bunged Up- this is unreal!I am experiencing exactly the same as you - I'm a healthy girl, mid-twenties etc. And in past two months have developed this.

I'm at wits end - have done everthing to try and allieve it.
Saw GP- there's no great solution, he put me on a whole load of laxatives - its only a temporary solution, and once I stop, nothing happens.

then I went for colonic irrigation - things ok for about 2 weeks, then back to the same. was on herbal tablets which were great - but they made me feel really ill, so when i stopped, so did my system......very frustrating.

Now, I barely go once a week and am starting to think I have a spastic colon - can be brought on by stress, even though I'm not particularly stressed now, but did finish a very tough set of exams about 2 months ago.

Next step is a dose of Magnesium Oxide and taking Psyllium daily. Hoping this will help it to get back on track.

Found GP to be completely unhelpful - laughed it off saying "no-one ever died from not going to the toilet etc"........this was after 12 days of no movement!

I'll keep you updated on progress.....

Soulgirl its good knowing someone is in the same boat as me, although a rather unpleasant boat at that.. I got a colonic there about 1 year ago not cause I had problems, i was just curious he he

It would not bother me if I was not really regular a month ago, I went the loo after breakfast or lunch everyday now nothing.

I have tried eating prunes but they just give me wind and im not good with icky drinks so I could not drink the juice. I would love if there was a device where you could see into you bowels, i would say i have some amount of compacted ****e up there at this rate.

Well the meat could be stabalizing you. I go once a day. Maybe once every 2 days. And i eat maybe 2 meals a day. Some people go tsice a week. Some people go 3-5 times a day. The people who go more, are not in good shape imho.

seek advice from your GP. it's probably not a bad thing.

I have to say the colonic did help - and the woman was way more knowledgable about colon that GP was.
I just didnt stick to all her advice - thought I was back on track, but wasn't.

Thing is - colon can actually hold ALOT of stuff, so there's no point thinking you're going to explode just because you miss a few days (well, thats what i tell myself to calm myself down about it).

Colonic + follow up with herbal stuff + plenty of water and you should be ok.
I was also advised to cut down on dairy which i did, and it helped majorly, but then i lapsed as i couldnt forego the cappuccinos and i adore cheese. I regret that i didnt keep up all the advice she gave me, but, am going to go for a colonic this weekend, and then be really strict with the dairy thing.
Its very difficult to find a solution to this, I dont know what long-term things you can do.

Laxatives are cr*p (excuse the pun!). They just turn everything to liquid, and then you're back to where you started.

I'll let you know any progress.

You can get Psyllium in any health food shop but only use it when you start going regularly again and need to seriously increase water intake on it too.

I can send you the girl I went to see for colonic if you like - she practices a special method which shows the bowel how to pulse again and avoids making it lazy - like laxatives do.

Hmmn I estimate I would take 3-4 litres of water in a year on it's own, I can't stand the stuff, so far everything is in order.

Op, GP would be best advice

[Is it possible to suddenly develop IBS??

I am under a bit of stress and feeling slightly down so i think that might also be contributing to it. [/QUOTE]

I was diagnosed with IBS. Can vary from the runs to constipation and is very stress related.
However, it seems to "run" (lol) in our family through me mums line with her and all siblings having same thing.

Being a syndrome it has range of effects, but with myself you can get runs then constipation right after.

A doctor is the bet to diagnose.

Its common and by managing stress you can get back to normal.
Also keep a diary of foods you intake and effects..sounds gross but i managed to find that cabbage and broccoli are big no no's!!!!

A little "Warning don't read this thread" in the title wouldn't go astray.

    and everyone would read it.

But if someone can correct me if i am wrong, if you hover your mouse pointer over the title it comes up with the first few sentences.
