Yea, lahinch surf school is great. I did their weekend surfing package thingy a month ago and now I'm totally hooked.
I've spent most of my money on a surfboard and wetsuit and a tent and roofracks and petrol.
    It's worth it though.

There's is nowhere to surf on the east coast though - you need a big body of water like the atlantic ocean to generate waves.

Lahinch is definately the best place to learn cos it's full of beginners and the surf school is always in the water. And you can graduate to the reefbreak on the left of the beach (in front of O'Looneys) when you get better. Then you can go to the reefbreak in spanish point (when you get good). Then you can go to crab island off doolin pier (when you're near-pro). Then you can get towed-in by jet-ski to aileens off the cliffs of moher (when you feel suicidal - here's a video; http://www.dreamcatcherproductions.ie/previewflv.htm )

I agree Lahinch is a great place to start and the bus goes there too.
The surfschool will bring you to doonbeg if their is no surf in lahinch which is also pretty cool.

There's a surf school or two in Tramore, Co.Waterford.
http://www.surftbay.com/ About 110 miles from Dublin though.

Sligo is good aswell, as is Mayo. A friend of mine swears she saw some surfers catching waves in Killiney a few weeks ago! I first surfed down in a place called the Maherees in Kerry about a year ago and now I'm hooked. A local girl gave me a lesson which consisted of telling me to just get up on the board as quickly as i could and figure out how to stay up after that. The first wave that i stood up on sent me zipping across the water screaming like a child on a sugar rush. Have taken loads of lessons since on all sorts of boards in all sorts of conditions and all i know is i now daydream in surf
