Building a roll from NOTHING

    Hey all,

I have been reading the antics here without posting so I thought I'd give it a try. I've played only live games until 2 days ago and thought I'd give online a try. I didn't want to risk much so I started with the $50 free account from party poker. I lost about the first 30 bucks in 6 dollar buyins but then have won the last 4 $11 buyins.

I'm wondering whats the next step in moving up without risking too much of my meagre roll? Should I start looking to migrate to satilates or stick with cash games until i've played more?

    Thanks

you should open an account at NETELLER. This will help you move money around different sites. Then take advantage of the frequent bonuses that the various sites offer. You will find plenty of details and suggestions on www.bonuswhores.com. If you are wondering what kind of games you should play it doesn't matter, you should play whatever you are best at. If you are winning at $.02-$.05 holdem or whatever you mean by a "$6 cash game" then you should stick with that.

Thanks for that. Just to clarify, a $6 game is one where everyone buys in for $6 (no rebuys) and the winner takes $50. $11 is the same but the winner takes $100. so my roll is just over $400 now.

2 days play is too little to know whether your winnings are fluke/variance or skill. Moving up would most likely be a mistake.
I'd stick at the levels you are playing at the moment, and see what your rate of return is after 100 games.
    Good Luck.

How long have you been playing live?

Why not multi table rather then stepping up.

These games are known as 'Sit and Gos' or 'Single Table Tournaments'. A cash game is a game where you can come and go as you please and the blinds do not change level. I definatly wouldn't move up stakes just yet, but if you do make sure you drop down if you lose a few buy ins. Do not try to stay at that level or move up to try and make back your loss quicker, which it looks like you did with the $6 -> $11 move.

Woah there! What STT's exist on Party that pay out 100% to the winner? Are these 2 or 3 table games?

The following is for 1-table games (Single table tournaments - stt's) but wouldn't be too far wrong for 2 or 3 table games also:
The standard wisdom is that you play with minimum of 20-30 buy-ins for STT's providing you are an overall winner at that level. That last bit is important and honestly it's extremely rare that anyone following such a bankroll strategy knows they are a winner at a level they've moved up to. To know for sure you'd have to play thousands of games but at such a low level try 100 games at 10$ (the rake is lower % wise than 5$, the standard isn't much different and you have 400$ which should see you through this) and if you have doubled your bankroll in 100 games move up to 20$ games. Doubling your br would be a 40% ROI (return on investment) which should be possible at these levels and will give you more of an idea of your ability.

thanks for the advice guys. turns out im wrong about the amount. Its not 100% to the winner, its $50. Hence i have won $50 X 4 = 200. The 400 comes from me investing money into it and forgetting about it :~ /

im gonna stick at the $6 level on reflection. i'm wondering when i should start thinking about sticking my nose into satelites etc.

i have been playing live pub tourneys etc for about 10 years

Play cheap ones now if you want but don't pay more than the $6 you're currently playing. Have a read of the Poker Guide sticky at the top of this forum for lots of good info...
