Do you mean DVD movies, written DVDs, or games? It could be that newer DVDs copy protection methods are getting the best of it, or in the case of written DVDs it could be the wrong format disc.

Is it happening with all DVDs, or just a few?

Could be a DMA problem, check here for more info: http://www.michna.com/kb/WxDMA.htm

From my experience with older machines... the DVD-Rom drives prefer '-R' discs if you are trying to access written files! If you think that the drive has had its day keep an eye on the for sale sections on these boards as you will usually pick up a good second hand one for around a €10 or so...

PIO mode shouldn't stop some discs from playing - they'll be helluva slow, but they'll still work.

Maybe the lens needs cleaning? Any electronics shops (Dixons, PC World, Maplin, etc.) and most record shops will sell lens cleaning discs (ones that just say "CD lens cleaner" are fine).
