Lads i twisted my knee in a match and i have been told by a consultant its probably cruciate ligament damage. I have not gone for a scan yet. The consultant told me that if its only a partial tear they will not operate and he said il have to play on til it fully ruptures, is their any truth in this?? Views from people who have done thier cruciate would be welcome.

i didnt know that they would wait!!!
I tore mine in november 04 playing rugby. had to wait till the following august for an operation on it and I am still recovering from it!!! won't get back to rugby because i tore cartilege at the same time so there is a risk of arthritis. From what I hear it is not too hard to get back just from a cruciate though.

1 of my friends dislocated his knee back in november and as the knee came out it almost tore his cruciate(90% tear) and his medial ligament and he had a small operation on it to try to fix the medial but they let the cruciate heal on its own as its better for the ligament apparently and was also told that he'd only have an op if he'd fully torn it.... he's back training now bout 2 months with no real ill effects yet but he still hasnt tried any contact!

but if his healed without any surgery then surely it should heal with rest?!

I think it depends on the extent of it.

I know Peadar Andrews of Dublin went the route of healing without surgery, and at the moment he's 100%.

I dont know whether there is some risk of doing it without surgery. Any time a soccer lad does it across the water they seem to go the surgery route (?), which of course involves a much longer layoff, but perhaps it reduces the chances of a re-occurence?

For an amateur sportsperson, with a life away from the game, if you can go the non surgery route then thats probably the way to go.

i tore mine in my left knee about 9 years ago when I was 15. I didnt get an operation on it. It took about a year and a half to heal fully and I am back playing GAA now fully.
