Working in the US?

Starting to feel a little bored of Ireland but have too many financial commitments to just up and leave to go travelling etc.

I know there are a few US-based ex-pats on this forum so I'm just curious as to how you arranged work there? Did you just move over and job-hunt once you were there or did you have something arranged before you left? If so, how did you find the job?

    Thanks for any replies :)

And not to hijack sleepys thread, did you get a business to sponsor you for a visa and how difficult/easy was this and what qualifications did you have at the time? (sorry to butt in, but I'm sure this info would be helpfull for you also sleepy :))

I got my Green Card in the lottery, which is 100% dumb luck. You could try looking around the job sites and see if any ads mention that they are willing to sponsor applicants for a visa. The job market (for engineers / programmers at least) is currently the best I can remember since the doc-com glory days, so you might get lucky.

Some of the best sites in my experience are:

    www.careerbuilder.com
    www.monster.com
    www.hotjobs.com
    www.dice.com (tech-focused)

Have you lads thought about Canada or Oz at all? They seem to have more logical criteria for handing out visas without employer sponsorship, as opposed to the US "think of a number between 1 and 3,000,000" method.

Also, the "Green Card Info" sticky in Region->Abroad has a good bit of info, and links to older threads on this topic.
