I remember wanting the same thing a few years ago and I had to get an electrician in to do it for me (I could have probably done it myself but didnt want to risk doing anything wrong)

Sorry, other side of the country. If you were close, maybe we could have done something for you.

It really is a simple job though. Hardest part is extending the wires from an existing socket to wherever you need it. The socket itself can be bought in any hardware shop. Have you anyone handy that you can ask at all?

Other thing you might be able to do is to buy an extension cable whatever length you need it to make the run from an existing socket, if you can find an easy and inconspicuous route for the wire.

Got a guy coming tomorrow from OR cables anyone heard of them?
said they wont start unless im there and happy with where he wants to put the cable. So pissed off with Eircom renting a line off them and paying for their broadband but they wont put one in for me even if im willing to pay for it.

you don't necessarily need a new socket. you could just buy the cable from peats and run it up the stairs yourself. its what i did. only two of the four wires in a phone socket are used anyway so its not that complicated. a special crimping tool is needed to put the connections on which i don't have so i just bought a short cable that already had the connections attached along with the long one, cut the connections off each end and attached them to the long cable. no probs

What do you mean by this, it would be fairly unusal for a wireless modem not to have the range to cover the whole house - even from downstairs, say under the Telephone table.

As one of the earlier poster mentioned, you can usually get away with an extension cable, I used to run it under the stairs carpet. Worked grand for me - even for BB.

For all those whining about Eircom not servicing your house' phone sockets, the only socket they have to worry about is the eircom branded socket, thats their durisdiction and nothing else. Any other phone points are purely optional and down to the house' builder, hence not being eircoms responsibility.

Eircom can and do fix up and repair internal wiring.

    Have a look at this:

    http://www.eircom.ie/About/Activities/sn1_pt1.pdf on Page 3.
The first half hour or part thereof costs €57.65.
Any subsequent half hour or part thereof costs €28.82.

Eircom must fix up the wiring for FREE up to the main socket in the house. Any futher sockets cost money.

If you know anyone working for Eircom I'm sure they would do it for you after work or on a weekend for a price. You may have to supply the cable and socket as they probably have to account for all the materials they use themselves. Might be worth a shot.

I got my sockets sorted. The guy was great showed me Eircoms rates and his own which were cheaper. He said Eircom do some extra sockets in private houses but said that it could take a while to hear from them.I ended up getting two sockets upstairs,he ran all the wires on the outside of the house into the attic and then into the bedroom and study only a couple of foot of wire showing and the sockets he fitted didnt need to have bb filters plugged in as they are built into the sockets. Very impressed and he only charged me 90 euro thanks for all your help guys.:)
